Summer dates for Spain, France

June 2, 2002  |  Comments Off on Summer dates for Spain, France  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Several various sources in Europe have reported upcoming Cranberries tour dates on the continent, and all of the accounts match up very well.

Days ago, a newspaper in Málaga, Spain reported that the band would be playing in the city this summer. Now, with a little bit of research, it has been discovered that the tentative date for this show is July 24th, with Australian Blonde as the opening act.

French ticket site TicketNet has just posted yet another tour listing, this time for July 28th at the Theatre Antique in Vienne, France, which will be a summer festival. The site is currently selling seats at a price of 36 Euro.

In related tour news, Dolores told a sold-out crowd in Vienna, VA, last week that the band would be returning to North America in a brief period of time. “We’re not lying this time!” she joked with the crowd, as Dolores has made many such promises to audiences in the past with little follow-up. There’s no information of exactly when the band will be returning to North America after the current tour, but if MCA is smart, perhaps they’ll return this fall to promote the upcoming “greatest hits” disc.

Is another Euro tour on schedule? The Magic Eight Ball says, “Signs point to yes!”
Thanks to Stéphane for the tip.

Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: the flashlight

June 2, 2002  |  Comments Off on Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: the flashlight  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

So you say you want another perspective on Zombieguide’s pilgrimage to Wolf Trap?  No? Too bad! Here’s more impressions of the show, this time from my amigo Chris, who attened the Meet and Greet and was my helper monkey with taking pictures, etc.

Hey everyone. I’m Chris; Alex’s friend who went to the Baltimore Mistletoe Meltdown. After coming back from Wolf Trap, let me just say one word. Wow. The whole experience was absolutely amazing. The concert was really great! The set list was especially good for someone like me with limited knowledge of songs by The Cranberries. The lighting was great, the songs were fantastic, and seeing Dolores up close dancing was pretty damn awesome. One thing that I found kind of odd however, was the lack of people standing in the crowd. I’ll note that I didn’t really stand up much until half way through, but I don’t think more than 5-10 people in the rows in front of us even stood until the final song. Dolores made many attempts to get people to stand up, even by taunting us, to no avail.

During some of the more electrifying songs, Alex and I, two of the probable ten people in the whole audience who had glow sticks would wave them at Dolores. During one song while we were doing so, she held out the microphone in our direction and winked. That was really awesome! As for the show, it was one of the most exciting times I’ve had in a long while.

However, there was an event Alex and I took part in prior to the show. This of course was the “Meet and Greet”. Around 7pm, about an hour and a half before the Meet and Greet, Alex and I experience a few looks when talking about meeting The Cranberries. We even had two ladies come up to us and freak out. I think they got the impression that Zombieguide was handing out Meet and Greets. We didn’t bother to explain it, so oh well. We then of course met board member Yusef. After some waiting around, and discovering are awesome seats (which were in the fourth row, only a couple of seats left from direct center), we met up with Yusef again, his friend, and two other ladies who had meet and greets also. We spent a good twenty minutes sitting in a nice little lobby section by the entrance to the dressing room. After Alex, Yusef, and the other two ladies talked about Cranberries stuff that I simply had no idea about, I saw Dolores lead the band in. Alex then scream “Oh My…” After Alex and Yusef and the ladies shook Dolores’s hand and gave her a hug, they moved on to talk to others. It was at this time I was standing by Dolores and we casually said “Hi” to each other. By now, most of you may think I was undeserving, but I’ll be the first one to admit it. After handing her my ticket and asking for her autograph, the nervousness kicked in and I muttered a choking “Thanks!!”

Most of my meet and greet was spent taking pictures for Zombieguide. It was then, that I saw Don, Dolores’s husband. I swear that for one second, I had mistaken him for wrestling superstar and legend, Hollywood Hulk Hogan. After slightly laughing to myself, I tried to get a picture of Dolores signing Alex’s poster. I was unable to do this however, as Don was always within five feet of Dolores and just gave me a blank stare. This image came to my mind, as I pondered whether of not to ask him to move please.

I thought it best not to ask him to move. He looked rather threatening. After Alex got all of his autographs, I handed him the camera back and then mingled with the band. Standing next to Fergal, he greeted me with a “Hi Again”. I shook his hand and apologized that we didn’t have any soiled napkins from $20 Super Dogs for him to sign. He just smiled and replied, “That’s good!”

After a minute or two, I went over to gather up the “swag” that we didn’t get signed, when suddenly; Don was coming after me with his flashlight!

All he said to me first was “Move’, while waving his flashlight around. I gave him a scared and confused look when he said again in a nicer tone, “You’re gonna have to move out of the way so you can take a picture of the band”. I suppose I am being hard on Don though. After all, what are we to him than just some snot-nosed little brats that want to get near his wife? After saying goodbye to the band, we were quickly led up to the ground floor again and back to our seats. It seemed like “meet and greets” are very nerve racking for the people in charge of protecting the band.

Well, that was it. I can definitely say that this was better than the Mistletoe Meltdown; however there was the lack of excitement of chasing down a bus to get a signature, as well as the time of near solitude given for a short interview. All in all, it was a great experience that I can’t wait to experience again!

One last word, sorry for the unprofessional pictures. My hand was shaking with nervousness like crazy; so much that I barely could hold down the button half way on the camera to focus it without taking a picture.

Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: Merchandise report

May 31, 2002  |  Comments Off on Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: Merchandise report  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Of course no concert is complete without raiding the Merchandise Booth. Take a look at some of the fine wares being offered on the current tour. Note that we’ll try to remember prices as best as we can, but some may only be approximate.

Tour Poster: $5
It’s small, granted, but the tour posters were the only venue-specific items at the show, even though I didn’t realize it right away. Each mini-poster includes the show’s city, venue, and date at the bottom, making it an ideal momento of the concert.

Glow Stick: $5
Snap it in half and get a bright fluorescent glow that lasts for several hours and can been seen from a pretty good distance. They are connectable, so you can stock up and really put on a show in the crowd. Don’t be afraid to crack it too early — ours lasted for well over 12 hours (with some refrigeration). Although surprisingly, not too many people in the audience seemed to have one. Also, beware the graphic is only a sticker so it can and does wear if you’re shaking it around a good bit (as you can see by the picture).

Laminate Lanyard: $12
Impress your friends with your pseudo-backstage pass! Simply open up the plastic, pull out the wax paper, stick in your ticket stub, and seal. But don’t expect to actually go anywhere with it — it says “NO BACKSTAGE ACCESS” directly under where the ticket goes. (Autographs not included, of course.)

T-Shirt: $25
Ok, so it’s not the most original thing in the world, but there’s nothing more classic than a concert tee. There were several designs available (only one seen above), including a tan “circles” motif and a gray athletic-type shirt with long sleeves cut short (may have been a ladies’ shirt).

Tourbook/Program: $10
One of the most worthwhile things (highly recommended) to pick up was the tourbook. There’s ten pages (front and back, including cover) filled with some great pictures, although not a whole lot of reading material. However, it’s our favorite item at the moment, so be sure to pick one up.

Sorry we couldn’t show you everything, but there are several other items worth mentioning. First is the “condom keychain” ($8) — a blue hollow keychain with a Cranberries logo, filled with, well you can figure the rest out. The backpack is small and simple, so you may not want to use it for carrying around your massive college textbooks. A hooded fleece was also available, although we admittedly didn’t get a very good look at it.

Also, one last tip: we heard on our way out that several items were sold out by the end of the show. It’s a good idea to hit the booth early, not to mention to avoid the after-show rush.

Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: Meet & Greet

May 29, 2002  |  Comments Off on Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: Meet & Greet  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Zombieguide was on hand last night at The Cranberries’ performance at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, and needless to say, we have much to share. Wolf Trap, the only National Park in the United States dedicated to the performing arts, was a packed house — lawn seating was completely sold out, while pavillion seating was at near-capacity with the exception of the distant balconies.

While the opening band, the Kickovers (“from Boston, Mass,” as they frequently reminded us) were finishing their set, we stood in the designated area with the small group of lucky Meet and Greet’ers (six total). Sett, the band’s tour manager came out to meet us and led us through heavy security to a nice open social area backstage. We sat and waited for nearly fifteen or twenty minutes as crew members and miscellaneous staff hustled about. After some idle Cran-chat with Shannon (webmaster of the most excellent Cranberries E-Mail Newsletter) and Yusef (a fellow Zombieguide Discussion Boards member), Dolores & Co. walked through the double doors behind us.

As could be expected, we all jumped up, said our “hellos”.
Thankfully, everyone in the group was very familiar with Zombieguide and we received some humbly-accepted compliments. “Nice to see you again!” Fergal greeted me, while my friend Chris later told him, “Sorry we don’t have any dirty napkins for you to sign this time.”

“That’s good” he chuckled.

And finally I was able to meet the incredible Dolores O’Riordan in person. Life goals? Check! What is there to say? She’s ten times as beautiful in person as in any picture, and needless to say, I was a bit awestruck.

After what seemed like only about four or five minutes maximum, the band stood against the wall for a last-minute group shot. After that, they were off, out the door. We gathered our things and exited the Stage Door to hear the first beats of “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee” — the band was already on stage. We rushed back to our seats.

Expect much more from the Vienna gig later tonight and in the coming days!

Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: The show

May 29, 2002  |  Comments Off on Zombieguide @ Wolf Trap: The show  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

And what a show it was! It seems to me that Cranberries concerts are a variety of fine wines that get better with a little age; each one I go to is better than the last.

The show started with a punctual “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee,” a stellar kickoff to a whopping 27-song set, including some major crowd-pleasers, most notably “Ode to My Family,” “Linger,” and “Salvation.”

“You can all stand up now. Rock concerts are good for that, ya know?” Dolores sarcastically taunted the crowd a few songs into the gig — and it would be one of my few complaints as well. It was strange, to put it mildly, to see a half-seated crowd in the middle of “Zombie”. But as expected, it was remedied before the end of the show — no one could take a seat after the uber-energetic performance of “Salvation”.

Wolf Trap is now a personal favorite as far as venues go — the atmosphere was relaxing, spacious, and uncommercialized (as it is, after all, a national park). The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, which is an extremely underrated “plus” when it comes to venue quality (ie no two-ton yellow-shirted Nazis).

As always, it was outstanding and I look forward to the band visiting the DC/VA/MD region again in the near future… and if the “wine” theory holds up, the next time will be even better than the last.

Expect much more from the Vienna gig in the coming days — including a Merchandise Report with several images and the all-important price tags!

Dolores on “Analyse” video: “I thought it sucked!”

May 25, 2002  |  Comments Off on Dolores on “Analyse” video: “I thought it sucked!”  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

“I thought it sucked!” Dolores recently told French music channel MCM about the video for “Analyse. I didn’t like the ‘Analyse’ video, I just didn’t like it.”

“It needed more direction” added Fergal.

“I thought it sucked! I didn’t like it” Dolores commented resolutely, adding that she still likes the “Time Is Ticking Out” video, but that “This Is The Day” is (correctly) by far the best of them all.

“We just made a new video” Dolores commented on “This Is The Day. It’s probably one of the best we’ve ever put together, its really good! There’s alot of images of things that people fear… it’s a very psychological video. It’s cool though!”

“You’re always experimenting, you know?”

Dolores recently told French music channel MCM, discussing some of the new material they’ve written since “Wake Up”.

“Like, today, we just wrote a new song and it’s really cool. And it’s exciting, just something to look forward to, and the excitement is still there… [along with] the happiness.”

The band plans to release a “Greatest Hits” disc this fall with two new tracks, while a new album is expected for late next year.

Mexico City gig cancelled

May 24, 2002  |  Comments Off on Mexico City gig cancelled  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Both Ticketmaster Mexico and show organizers Ocesa today confirmed that The Cranberries gig scheduled for June 26th in Mexico City has been cancelled.

When asked for comment, Ticketmaster Mexico claimed that the show had been cancelled by Ocesa, the show’s organizers. Ocesa, however, responded that the show had been cancelled by the band themselves.

The date was to follow the still-scheduled June 25th Mexico City date. It is possible that lower-than-expected ticket sales prompted the band’s management to determine that two concerts for Mexico’s capital city were not needed. Meanwhile, the date has been removed from both Ticketmaster Mexico’s website and The Cranberries Official Website. We still await official word on the status of the show.

World Tour unlikely to hit London

May 19, 2002  |  Comments Off on World Tour unlikely to hit London  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

“Nah, I don’t think we’re going back to London. They don’t like us there very much,” Dolores told a small gathering of fans Friday night outside the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Her comically pouting face belied her sincerity, but she may not have been exaggerating — UK tour dates have been sparse within the last few years, and the turnout has been far from overwhelming.

Friday’s concert was a special one for its audience; it was the band’s first concert in New York since terrorism rocked the city last September. “ZOMBIE was next and took on a whole new meaning to the NYC crowd as Dolores said the song was about terrorism and she was very very sorry for what happened here. It was angry, filled with raw emotion and very vibrant. It brought chills up and down my spine,” said Tom Morgan, a Zombieguide visitor who attended the show. “The final song had Dolores put on a T-shirt with the American flag on it and she said ‘We’re behind you 150%’. DREAMS was highlight video film material as she yelled DREAMS and brought the house down. Everyone was into this one as the band played flawlessly and Dolores had the crowd sing half the lyrics.”

Of course, Dolores’ joking should by no means exclude the possibility of future UK tour dates, but it seems that the band has no plans to tour the islands extensively anytime soon.

Rare “Disappointment”, “Bosnia” live MP3 downloads

May 10, 2002  |  Comments Off on Rare “Disappointment”, “Bosnia” live MP3 downloads  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Long thought to be non-existant, live versions of two very rare songs have just recently surfaced on the trading scene. Previously thought to be album- only, live versions of No Need To Argue’s “Disappointment” and “To the Faithful Departed” ‘s ending plea “Bosnia” have come to the surface in an amateur video bootleg. The show was recorded on December 9, 1994, at the Astro Arena, in Houston, Texas.

“Disappointment” was originally only a studio experiment by the band. Toying around with a crude melody for a few days in the studio, the band finally formed the track, and deemed it fit for the album. “Bosnia” was written after Dolores was contacted by War Child and her awareness of the turmoil of Eastern Europe was enlightened. Given the orchestral style of “Bosnia”, one would usually exclude it from a live set. But now, both have come to light in live versions for the very first time.

Below are some exclusive MP3s of each song. With the removal of “Bosnia” ‘s trademark boys’ choir, saw, and music box, Dolores’ vocals are substituted, which makes for a completely different listening experience.

· Disappointment (Live in Houston) (MP3, 5.8 MB) (Link no longer available)
· Bosnia (Live in Houston) (MP3, 7.3 MB) (Link no longer available)

In related news, a live version of “Close to You”, the Carpenters’ cover, has also recently been found. The recording comes from the complete 1994 show of Feile Tipperary, Ireland.

Individual re-releases postponed until Fall

May 4, 2002  |  Comments Off on Individual re-releases postponed until Fall  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Back in March, the Official Cranberries Website made the announcement that “all 4 CDs [included in the “Treasure Box”] (which are individually packaged!) will also be made available for separate purchase, later in the year.” The individual re-releases were originally intended to be released alongside May 14th’s “Treasure Box” boxed set. The set was released last month in Europe.

The May ’02 issue of the American release dates magazine Ice reports that the release of the four individual CDs have been postponed until Fall 2002. The reason for the delay of the bonus-packed re-releases, which will replace the band’s first four now out-of-print albums, has not been given.

One explanation may be that the band also plans to release a “Greatest Hits” disc sometime this fall, which may include new material. The releases may be scheduled to coincide with each other, but this is only speculation at the moment.

Dolores turns down “dirty” acting role

April 29, 2002  |  Comments Off on Dolores turns down “dirty” acting role  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

The Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan has made several hints in recent years that she would like to pursue a side project in acting. British-based news service Ananova reports today that she has already received several offers and has had to turn many of them down, mainly due to her packed touring schedule.

Her most recent offer came from Irish director Jim Sheridan. “The role he offered me was that of a really provocative woman whose every second word is something dirty,” she told the daily Lidove Noviny after the recent Prague gig. “Jim said he wants his character to be really sexy,” she added, which isn’t too far from what Dolores would like to be playing.

“I want to play some kind of femme fatale – curly hair, big breasts and a tight dress. I imagine it would be like ‘Hollywood! I’m here – Dolores O’Riordan in person!'”

The Cranberries Management attempts to buy fan domains

April 29, 2002  |  Comments Off on The Cranberries Management attempts to buy fan domains  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Management for The Cranberries, most notably Timeless Music, has just pulled out of an unsuccessful bidding negotiation to acquire the fan-owned domain name “www.the-cranberries.com.”

The Cranberries Tape Trader, which is currently situated at www.the- cranberries.com, is owned by Quebecoise fan Danny Kronstrom. Kronstrom, who has operated the Tape Trader since 1996, began leasing the domain in early 2000, with the lease expiring this May.

The Official Cranberries Website currently functions under two domain names, both the original www.cranberries.ie (in operation since January 1998) and www.cranberries.com, which was signed over from Island last year, who had held the address since the mid-1990’s. The band’s website is owned and operated completely independently of their record company.

After negotiating for two weeks over an unspecified sum, Kronstrom declined the offer and renewed his lease for the next two years.

CNN interview transcript

April 28, 2002  |  Comments Off on CNN interview transcript  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Yesterday, CNN Headline News aired an hourly “On the Road” segment featuring The Cranberries and highlighting the band’s upcoming North American tour. The “surprise” interview came as a bit of a shock to some (including yours truly), as Headline News is most likely the most-watched news channel in the United States. For those that missed it, we have the entire segment transcribed here:

Anchor: …A check of local news is next for many of you, and for others, music hits the road — The Cranberries want you to wake up and smell the coffee before time ticks out!

(A video clip of “Time is Ticking Out” plays and then switches to the song being played live during the band’s press tour last August. Fade out to commercial)

Anchor: The Cranberries have been on the music scene for more than a decade. The band just launched a new tour that it’s hoping will keep fans wrapped around its finger. They talked with JoAnn Sioux on this Music on the Road.

(Music on the Road intro. “Time is Ticking Out” video clip)

Dolores: We all grew up together and we met each other as teenagers and then we became celebrities together and then we became parents kind of at the same time. So, it was kind of nice, we’ve all gone through similar things at the same time.

Anchor: More than eleven years after they first formed in Ireland, The Cranberries are still hard at work, making music together.

(A video clip of “Time is Ticking Out” plays and then switches to the song being played live during the band’s press tour last August. )

Anchor: The band is on a world tour in support of “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee,” The Cranberries’ first new album in two years. And its a title that seems to reflect their state of mind.

(“Analyse” video clip)

Dolores: It’s kind of like I have an awakening that occurred right now in my life. Its kind of like I’ve just woken up and smelled the coffee.

Fergal: I think all of us have just become more relaxed and and we’re kind of trying mostly just to enjoy it and have fun as much as we can.

Anchor: Their guitar-driven pop sound and the distinctive vocals of Dolores O’Riordan helped The Cranberries break on the music scene in the early 1990s.

(“Free to Decide” live)

Anchor: After scoring a string hit singles early on and selling millions of albums, the band denied rumors a few years back of O’Riordan possibly leaving to pursue a solo career. These days, the Cranberries are happily together, doing what they love.

Dolores: As long as the fans are happy and people like our music and what not, as long as there’s a crowd to play to and it’s kind of worth our while going out there doing what we do…

Anchor: The Cranberries will swing through Montreal on May 10th before heading to Philadelphia, Boston, and New York.

(End of “Zombie” live)

Limerick Anniversary Concert date revealed

April 26, 2002  |  Comments Off on Limerick Anniversary Concert date revealed  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Tour shirts being sold on The Cranberries’ current European leg of the “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee” World Tour reveal a long-awaited tour date for the band’s hometown of Limerick, Ireland. Planning for a ten-year anniversary gig in Limerick has been in the works for several months, as the band has not played on their home turf since late 1993.

The shirts list August 3rd, 2002 as the date for the event. The date has yet to be listed by the constantly-updated itinerary found on the band’s official website, but the odds of printing T-shirts with “unconfirmed” tour dates are next to nothing. Organizers expect the large-scale concert to take place at the newly-constructed Limerick Racecourse in Patrickswell. No word yet on what other events will coincide with the ten-year anniversary festivities, but the sheer thought of it makes us giddy! Stay tuned to Zombieguide for the latest updates on this event.

“OOR” review translation

April 21, 2002  |  Comments Off on “OOR” review translation  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Yesterday we posted a a scan of the Amsterdam review from the Dutch magazine “OOR.” We unfortunately mistakenly said that contributor Jessica van Kessel works for “OOR” but is only currently studying to become a journalist. We’ll let her explain in her own words of how exactly she got her review into “OOR”:

During my studies (international management), I worked at a media company that published a magazine for young people (age 16-25). I did the marketing and some editorial writing for it, which is the best job I ever had because it meant keeping contact with record, movie and promotion companies, and having the chance to create campaigns to present new bands, movies or cd’s to the readers. Unfortunately, the publisher decided to resign and take the magazine off the market, so I had to find myself another job. I still remained on some of the promotion companies mailing lists though, so during the past year I’ve been receiving tons of press announcements and ecards about Madonna, Kylie, U2 etc, which I all deleted right away. Until out of the blue, there suddenly was a Cranberries e-card which I happily forwarded to you 😉 So that ecard was still a remainder of my old job.

The review in OOR is a completely different story: since 1999 I know a pop photographer, who always is present when the crans visit Holland and makes the most beautiful shots. He went to their concert in the Heineken Music Hall together with another photographer, from the music magazine OOR, who always have this section called ‘Visitor of the Week’ where they pick out a visitor to comment on the show. So the OOR-representative asked the photographer if he knew anybody for that section, and he told him about me as he knew I am eh… well kind of passionate about the cran’s music ;-). So they rushed off to the venue to see if they could find me there before the show started. Well amazingly they did manage to pick me out of the huge row of people, so I needed to get out for a while to take pictures ‘n stuff. I was kind of shocked seeing the picture, as I am really pulling my ugly ‘oh no it’s only ten minutes before the doors open and although I am really happy they asked about the review, but I do not want to be on the other end of the street when that happens’ – face, LOL! 😉 Anyhow, the OOR-representative asked me to write a heartfelt story about my perspective on the band from the first moment I became a fan, the shows I had seen so far, etc. So I wrote about one page, already knowing that they had to shorten it, which they did. Due to a shortage of space they had to leave out a comparison with two other shows and the bands interaction with the fans, but kept the original remaining text intact though.

About the journalism-thing: I am studying that right now, to fulfill a long- time wish. The study will end in December this year, but from June it’s ok take up jobs in that workfield. Writing professionally for a magazine like OOR would be amazing, but I am quite far from that level right now. Also, I am not sure if I’d choose the direction of pop journalism, as I would never want to find myself on the other end of the line, where the crans completely hate people with that profession. Speaking of this subject, I think I actually bumped into you on icq while I was making some assignments, as I remember chatting a little bit about that and you telling me you were planning to take up journalism as well, right? Maybe in that conversation there was a little confusion, I don’t know. Anyhow, could you please take that passage about me being a journalist for OOR from The Herald, as you are giving me way too much credit then! I was planning to send this explanation together with my translation today, but I hadn’t expected you to put the review online so soon 😉

Anyhow, enough blah-blah, here’s the translation, or at least an attempt to – I don’t think I could find the right English words to translate so for some reason it looks very awful, but here we go anyway:

“Armed with enough food and drinks to survive at least a week I had planned to view the complete marathon broadcast of Woodstock ’94. But after a day of staring at the screen in complete boredom, I knew I wasn’t going to last another day. Until in the middle of the night, an unknown and really young band took the stage. From the first tone I was wide awake. With that unique voice, subtle lyrics and beautifully composed arrangements, The Cranberries distinguished themselves clearly from all the predictable, established bands of the nineties. The biggest impression was made with the song Zombie, which became a big hit because of that particular performance. It was safe to turn the tv off after that, as I was convinced that I’d seen the highlight of the festival right there and then. During the years that followed, I’ve seen the band perform about 8 times, varying from the 013 [a Dutch venue], an old 30’s theatre, big stadiums, a recording studio [their showcase at 3fm] and the inner court of a castle in Dublin. Their show at the Heineken Music Hall was one of their best. There were a couple of sound problems, but the enthusiasm of the band and the energetic performance of Dolores completely made up for it. They clearly had a lot of fun, and the audience quickly responded to that: the first 15 rows were jumping and singing continiously [at least I thought they were!]. During this tour The Cranberries make a lot of changes in their setlist, and try to play songs that the fans never heard live before. Last friday they played Joe and The Concept. The balance between the typical intensive Cranberries-songs like Ridiculous Thoughts and the modest, delicate songs like Daffodil Lament was perfect. Because of their renewing approach The Cranberries will never become predicable or boring band, in fact, I could see them every week!”

Thanks to “The Vine” Jessica van Kessel again for the info.

First images: Treasure Box

April 12, 2002  |  Comments Off on First images: Treasure Box  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

The wrath of “Treasure Box” has been unleashed upon Europe and we have some of the first images taken from inside the somewhat mysterious box.

As promised, all of the liner notes and CD cases feature new art in some form or another, and in some cases, completely new images. One of the most intriguing images is one titled the “Bruce Fairbairn Songchart,” a visual record kept by the late producer of “To the Faithful Departed.” The chart confirms the long-held suspicions that “False” was originally recorded for “To the Faithful Departed,” but later scrapped. Empty blanks on the chart, a puzzling graph of rainbows, skulls, check marks, and other symbols, seems to show that the recording was either never finished or that the results were unsatisfactory. There are also old rumors that a studio version of “Yesterday’s Gone” was created in the studio during the album’s recording, but this chart shows no evidence of the title.

The full listing for the chart is:

I.J.S.J.L
Rebels
Joe
Forever Yallow Skies
Free To Decide
Salvation
Hollywood
Electric Blue
I’m Still Remembering
Will You Remember?
When You’re Gone
Cordell
Warchild
Bosnia
False
The Picture I View

Interlude (Presumably “Intermission”)

All of the books feature the full lyrics in plain type — no more deciphering Dolores’s handwriting on the “No Need to Argue” notes. Each new booklet also contains notes from the Art Director, Cally, ranging on subjects from the Uncertain EP, the famous “couch,” and the abstract “To the Faithful Departed” photo session.

The only apparent difference (thus far) between the full “Treasure Box” and the individual releases is that the individual releases will carry is a barcode, which is absent from the individual albums themselves, but is carried on the outer box.

Huge thanks to Daniel Steward for the images and info.

Exclusive: Full “Watercircle” & “Xeric Records Demo” downloads

April 9, 2002  |  Comments Off on Exclusive: Full “Watercircle” & “Xeric Records Demo” downloads  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Four months ago, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting The Cranberries drummer Fergal Lawler outside of the Baltimore Arena. After lamenting that he had nothing on the tour bus to give me, he promised to “post something off” to me… something which arrived in my mailbox last week.

In the white envelope arrived two CD-Rs filled with the kind of elusive rarities that would make any dedicated Cranberries fan soil their panties. Along with the CDs came a typed tracklist from Fergal and a handwritten note from one of the band’s representatives. The list has a few errors, but they’re sorted out below…

But of course you didn’t click here to read about all that. Zombieguide is happy to present some exclusive full downloads of some of the rarest Cranberries demo recordings from 1990 to 1991, recorded on their first indie label, Xeric. To read more about Xeric Records, the Watercircle demo, and the Uncertain EP, read up on Zombieguide’s Ultimate Bio.

These tracks are still available for download from Essentially Cranberries (Links no longer available) (They were removed from Zombieguide due to high bandwidth consumption).

“Watercircle” Demo by The Cranberry Saw Us, 1990
1. Sunday (MP3, 7.2 mb)
2. Linger (MP3, 7.4 mb)
3. Chrome Paint (MP3, 5.3 mb)
4. A Fast One (MP3, 5.1 mb)

Click here to visit the Media Vault to download these archived tracks! (Link no longer available)

Watercircle, released in early 1990, is believed to be the band’s firt demo together with Dolores. The tracks “Chrome Paint” (aka “Crown Paint”) and “A Fast One” were among the band’s earliest tracks and never reappeared on any other recording, but were staples of the band’s early live set.

Xeric Records Demos 1990-1991
1. Uncertain (MP3, 4.9 mb)
2. Reason (MP3, 2.7 mb)
3. Put Me Down (MP3, 4.0 mb)
4. Dreams (MP3, 6.4 mb)

Of all the tracks on the discs, these must be the rarest. I never even knew of the existence of an “Uncertain” demo — keep in mind all of these tracks are very different from the album versions. An interesting thing to note is that the Uncertain demo, which already has some static in it, ends with a woman’s voice saying, “Uncertain by The Cranberries…” before it cuts out, suggesting it was taken from a radio broadcast. The version of “Reason” found here is identical to that prevously found on the Dave Fanning Sessions, but this version is nearly twice as long, as the Dave Fanning Sessions version seems to have been cut prematurely. It’s possible that the version of “Dreams” here is from one of the band’s early demo tapes, but it sounds nothing like the short clip aired on MTV’s Rockumentary. Nevertheless, the early cut of “Dreams” retains every bit of the subtle etheral beauty that would make anyone fall in love with it all over again.

Uncertain EP, 1991
1. Uncertain (MP3, 4.5 mb)
2. Nothing Left At All (MP3, 5.6 mb)
3. Pathetic Senses (5.3 mb)
4. Them (5.5 mb)

Despite the notation on Fergal’s paper, these are all the EP versions from “Uncertain,” so nothing too terribly special.

Dave Fanning Sessions, 2FM, 1990
1. Linger (MP3, 7.4 mb) (Same as “Watercircle”)
2. Wanted (MP3, 3.2 mb)
3. Put Me Down (MP3, 4.5 mb)

One of The Cranberries’ earliest media spotlights was on 2FM’s Dave Fanning Sessions, where up-and-coming artists record in the 2FM studios for radio broadcast. The version of “Linger” here is the same recording found on “Watercircle” — probably aired on the radio mixed in with the sessions. “Wanted” is the same version that has always been associated with the Dave Fanning Sessions. The most interesting here is “Put Me Down” which is not the same version commonly associated with the session. The version that was prevously available is listed above under the Xeric demos.

The rest of the tracks (seen below) are all described correctly, although the John Peel Session took place in January 1992 (not 1991). The live tracks all seem to be taken from different gigs, all from the 1993-1994 era, all soundboard quality.

John Peel Session 1992
1. Waltzing Back (MP3, 5.1 mb)
2. I Will Always (MP3, 3.8 mb)

Live Tracks
1. I Still Do (MP3, 4.9 mb)
2. Daffodil Lament (MP3, 7.1 mb)
3. Not Sorry (MP3, 5.4 mb)
4. Waltzing Back (MP3, 5.5 mb)
5. Dreams (MP3, 6.6 mb)
6. Ridiculous Thoughts (MP3 6.7 mb)
