Lyrics

If you live in a dream world
Find it hard to let go
If you give your affection
You will learn to let go

Don’t hurt
You’ll be there
You must be strong / You must hold on*
She’ll be with your father
And they will be one in heaven, in heaven

If you lose your direction
Never fear, let it go
How you live, how you love life
You will never be alone / You will never walk alone*

Don’t hurt
You’ll be there
You must be strong
She’ll be with your father
And they will be one in heaven, in heaven
In heaven, in heaven,
In heaven, in heaven
In heaven, in heaven
In heaven, in heaven
In heaven
You will never walk alone*
You will never walk alone*
You will never walk alone*
You will never walk alone*

Notes

  • The song leaked as a demo on the Zombieguide forum on October 19, 2005, along with “In The Garden”. This demo appeared to be one of a 5-track review CD. This version of “Letting Go” has a different instrumentation than the Japanese album version and the Ordinary Day US digital single. The drums section starts at 2:04 on the 2005 version compare to 0:55 on the 2007 version; the drums section is also harder at the end of the 2005 version; there is additional guitar layer at the end of the 2005 version (starting at 4:22).
  • Dolores told about it in an interview to Hot Press in November 2005: “There’s another one, ‘Letting Go’, which leaked on to the internet and made me realise how out of control this piracy thing’s got. The CDs encoded so you can trace it, but what’s the point when it’s already out there?
  • Letting Go wasn’t released on Are You Listening?. It’s a bonus track on the Japanese version of the album. It was also available on i-Tunes US and Canada in 2007 with the single Ordinary Day.
  • The song was performed live for the first time by Dolores O’Riordan on December 7th, 2013 during the Concerto di Natale in Roma (Italy). She sung it with alternate and additional lyrics.

Other releases

  • Letting Go (demo version), 5-track preview CD (2005)

Meaning

In an interview given in 2007 Dolores explained: “When I started out recording this album, I wrote two songs that didn’t make it on to the record. ‘Letting Go’ had this funeral march thing, and ‘Without You’ was about missing my own family. They were both soft, piano-driven songs, so I thought this album was going to be nice and ethereal, but then I wrote ‘Black Widow’ and I started yelling. I realised I needed drums to take it to the next level, so it all kind of unfolded from there. I didn’t know what kind of music it was, because I don’t have that much knowledge.” (The Independent May 4, 2007)
