LYRICS

Oh my life
Is changing everyday
In every possible way

And oh my dreams
It’s never quite as it seems
Never quite as it seems

I know I’ve felt like this before
But now I’m feeling it even more
Because it came from you

Then I open up and see
The person falling here is me
A different way to be

La la-a-ya-a lalala la-a-ya-a ya-a-a-a

I want more
Impossible to ignore
Impossible to ignore

And they’ll come true
Impossible not to do
Impossible not to do

And now I tell you openly
You have my heart so don’t hurt me
You’re what I couldn’t find

A totally amazing mind
So understanding and so kind
You’re everything to me

Oh my life
Is changing everyday
In every possible way

And oh my dreams
It’s never quite as it seems
Cause you’re a dream to me, dream to me

La-a la-a-lala-a la-a-a-a la-a-a-a la-a
La-a la-a-lala-a la-a-a-a la-a-a-a la-a

La-a la-a-lala-a la-a-a-a la-a-a-a la-a
La-a la-a-lala-a la-a-a-a la-a-a-a la-a

NOTES

  • Dreams is the 1st single released from Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? in 1992.
  • A different studio version (produced by Jim Lockhart) was recorded in 1991 for the Dave Fanning Show . This was not a live, one-take recording like other media performances. This version remains commercially unreleased.
  • Fergal : “I Remember when we were writing it, Noel brought in the chords and as soon as it started I said, ‘This is different’. The demo isn’t really that different from what ended up on the album, the album version is a bit more poppy, a bit more uptempo. Around that time we were listening a lot to Peter Gabriel’s Passion album and a lot of world music. That was definitely an influence on that song.” (interview given to Hot Press, in a “Cranberries Special” in November 2002)
  • Noel: “‘Dreams’ was one of the early ones, as well. It’s probably, I don’t know, maybe about the fourth or fifth song […] but it was one of the early songs. Again it was just a very simple tune that we came up with and it just kind of came together really quick.
  • There are three versions of the video clip.
  • The song was played in several tv series or movies :
    – Milk Money (1994)
    – The Next Karate Kid (1994)
    – Radio Inside (1994)
    – My So-Called Life season 1 episode #3 (1995)
    – Beverly Hills, season 5 episode #24 “Unreal World” (1995)
    – Back of Beyond (1995)
    – Boys on the Side (1995)
    – The Baby-Sitters Club (trailer only – 1995)
    – Mission: Impossible (1996)
    – Malibu Shores, Pilot Part #1(1996)
    – You’veGot a Mail (1998)
    – Shot Through The Heart (1998)
    – Mona Lisa Smile (trailer only – 2003)
    – Cold case, Season 1 episode #19 “Late Return” (2004)
    – The TV Set (2006)
    – 90210, season 2 episode 6 “Wild Alaskan Salmon” (2009)
    – Being Erica, Season 3, episode #3 “Two Wrongs” (2010)
    – Broken Hearts (2010)
  • Dreams was used by the Ireland Tourism board in commercials and advertisments.
  • The song was covered by a Chinese singer, Faye Wong, in 1994 and was re-titled Dream Lover.
  • The American band Passion Pit played Dreams live and released their version of the song on a reissue of their album “Manners”.
  • Dreams is usually played by the band to end their concerts but in 2002 they played it to open their shows in Berlin and in Münster (Germany).
  • In 2012, during The Roses Tour in Oceania, in Asia and North America the band also changed their setlist and played Dreams to open all their concerts (except the first one in Auckland, New Zealand). During the European Leg of the Tour the band opened some of their concerts playing Dreams.
