LYRICS

Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh (uh)
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh, uh

You better believe I’m coming
You better believe what I say
You better hold on to your promises
Because you bet, you’ll get what you deserve
She’s going to leave him over
She’s gonna take her love away
So much for your eternal vows, well
It does not matter anyway

Why can’t you stay here awhi-ile
Stay here awhi-ile
Stay with me-e-e

Ho-o-o ho-o-o-o, all the promises we made (promises we made)
All the meaningless and empty words
I prayed, prayed, pray-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ayed
Ho-o-o ho-o-o-o, all the promises we broke (promises we broke)
All the meaningless and empty words
I spoke, spoke, spo-o-o-o-o-o-o-oke
Do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do
Do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do, do-do-do

What of all the things that you taught me
What of all the things that you’d say
What of all your prophetic preaching
You’re just throwing it all away
Maybe we should burn the house down
Have ourselves another fight
Leave the cobwebs in the closet
Cos tearing them out is just not right

Why can’t you stay here awhi-ile
Stay here awhi-ile
Stay with me-e-e ho ho

Ho-o-o ho-o-o-o, all the promises we made (promises we made)
All the meaningless and empty words
I prayed, prayed, pray-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ayed
Ho-o-o ho-o-o-o, all the promises we broke (promises we broke)
All the meaningless and empty words
I spoke, spoke, spo-o-o-o-o-o-o-oke
Wo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o, wo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o, wo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Ho-o-o ho-o-o-o, all the promises we made (promises we made)
All the meaningless and empty words
I prayed, prayed, pray-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ayed
Ho-o-o ho-o-o-o, all the promises we broke (promises we broke)
All the meaningless and empty words
I spoke, spoke, spo-o-o-o-o-o-o-oke
Oh eh oh eh oh eh oh eh, oh eh
Oh eh oh eh oh eh oh eh, oh eh
Oh eh oh eh oh eh oh eh, oh eh
Oh eh oh eh, he-e-e-e-e-e-e-e
Do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do
Do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do
Do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do
Do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do do-do-do

NOTES

  • Promises is the first single released from Bury The Hatchet in 1999.
  • The song was played live for the first time at The Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo (Norway) in 1998. In an interview to Hot Press (1999), Dolores told about that concert and about the song: “I thought it was really nice because I ve always had respect for it, and associated it with Ghandi and things like that. When we got to the venue A-ha were on stage, and that was pretty weird because I used to be a fan of theirs. It was like being a kid, except I d gotten older now and was in a band. Phil Collins was there and said we rocked because we did Promises . I tell you, Promises live is so loud. There were all these people with dickie-bows and stuff, and it was like woooooagh!
  • During the “Loud And Clear Tour” Promises was almost always the first song of the concerts.
  • The song was used in the TV series Charmed (season 2 episode 5 “She’s a Man, Baby, a Man”, 1999)
  • The band sometimes added Promises to their setlist on request of the audience.
