NOTES

  • The album is dedicated to the record producer Denny Cordell who signed The Cranberries to Island Records. The album booklet features a note from Dolores O’Riordan: “To The Faithful Departed – This album is dedicated to all those who have gone before us. Nobody knows exactly where these people are but I know we would like to believe it is in a better place. I believe it is a Human impossibility to obtain complete peace of mind in this dimension, there’s too much suffering and pain – particularly for children ‘Suffer Little Children’ To come unto me For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. To the faithful departed and those left behind There is a light that never dies.”
  • The photo shoot for the cover of this album was supposed to take place at the Grizedale Forest (Lake District, UK) but the band did not turn up. The “mobile yellow room” was thus “re-built in a studio in London where the band arrived dressed in D & G purple and had their photos taken in the warmth and sunny glow of the studio lights” reports the Art Director, Cally. “The portable yellow room was later filmed floating on a serene English lake burning down at night.”
  • “The baby was to be the front cover image. Just as I delivered the artwork to Island in New York, Messrs Hugh and Cry greeted the tiny genitalia of the proud baby on the cover from the fearful record execs. I rushed back to the UK to generate some suitably censored versions, but, fearing a third world war and few sales in America’s Bible Belt the band duly agreed to swap the baby, penis intact, for the band shot, bringing it neatly in-line with albums one and two and allowing to go on to sell to every household in the universe” Cally, Art Director.
  • ‘God Be With You’ and ‘Go Your Own Way’ are not quite normal Cranberries songs, as only Dolores recorded the first one, then Dolores and Noel the second one. “In December ‘96, Dolores recorded a song for the movie The Devil’s Own , and in February ‘97 Noel and herself recorded ‘Go Your Own Way’ for a Fleetwood Mac tribute album.” (Source: Fergal, cranberries.ie, January 29 th , 1998).
  • “Dying Inside”, which was written during the No Need to Argue Tour, and “False” were considered for this album. It is unclear if the songs were recorded though.
  • Along with Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, No Need To Argue and Bury The Hatchet, this album was re-released in 2002 as part of the Treasure Box set containing bonus tracks and new artwork. Each re-released album is now available individually replacing the now out of print original release.
