Salamanca ticket issue resolved

March 26, 2002  |  Comments Off on Salamanca ticket issue resolved  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

After disappointed Spanish fans were turned away empty-handed from some ticket houses as El Corte Ingles for the upcoming Salamanca gig, the Cranberries Official Website has clarified the issue.

Shortly after we posted our news story, the official page even removed the link to ServiCaixa, the “official” ticket vendor. However, the link has now been replaced, with a note that tickets will go on sale on April 1st. So for all of those around Salamanca: the wait is only a little longer.

“Is there no honor among thieves?!” The answer to the age-old question: a resounding “no.” Those taking a gander at the new commerical bootleg titled “Wake Up Barcelona” may have found something faintly familiar…

“Nice to see one of my own wallpapers on the cover of the new bootleg” – Norbert of Zombieguide Europe.

The official Italian Cranberries page CranberriesItalia has posted the first images of the individual albums to be included with “Treasure Box” in its international release next month. Here’s what the Italian page has to say:

“4 Classic Albums + 21 Bonus Tracks = 1 TREASURE BOX … the formula of the Cranberries is never as simple and as effective… in short, the collection of the first 9 years of musical activity of the band will be available in all the stores as Limerick’s “The Cranberries: Treasure Box”. All four CDs (manufactured individually) will also be, in addition, available for purchase separately.”

“The date of release in stores is scheduled for the day of 8 April 2002 (and the 14 of May for North America, in conjunction with the beginning of The Cranberries’ tour in that continent). The cover of the Treasure Box is visible in the news published on Tuesday, 19 March.”

New bootleg: “Wake Up Barcelona”

March 23, 2002  |  Comments Off on New bootleg: “Wake Up Barcelona”  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Spanish fans browsing the stores such as “Revolver” in Barcelona can now find a brand new commercial bootleg titled “Wake Up Barcelona”. The new 2- disc set was audience-recorded on March 15th at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain.

The art for the discs are nice, but as with almost any audience-recorded bootleg, the sound has several flaws. The overall quality is described as “not brilliant, but good.” However, the biggest disappointment is that “This is the Day” has been cut, as Dolores sings immediately when the track begins. Of course, the most obvious reason for this due to the recorder running out of tape. Nevertheless, it’s a forgivable mistake.
Now onto the tracks and scans:

Disc 1:
1. Wake Up and Smell the Coffee
2. Zombie
3. Analyse
4. Time is Ticking Out
5. Animal Instinct
6. You and Me
7. Ode to My Family
8. Just My Imagination
9. Loud and Clear
10. Desperate Andy
11. Pretty
12. When You’re Gone
13. I Can’t Be With You
14. Waltzing Back
15. Free to Decide

Disc 2:
16. Ridiculous Thoughts
17. Promises
18. Linger
19. I Really Hope
20. This is the Day
21. Dreams

Bonus Tracks:
22. Dreaming My Dreams (MTV Unplugged 1995)
23. Ode to My Family (MTV Unplugged 1995)
24. Linger (MTV Unplugged 1995)

At a meeting of the Salsa de Arándanos Club this weekend, the official Mexican Cranberries fanclub, members were given more information pertaining to the band’s upcoming summer tour. Most of the new information was leaked from an interview with Fergal taken by local station Orbita 105.7. Members were told that the Cranberries will once again be playing at the National Auditorium in Mexico City on June 26th. The Guadalajara date was also confirmed, but no venue was given.

The club’s president could also confirm to Zombieguide Mexico’s webmaster Sigma, with a visit to their offices, that Fergal did in fact tell Orbita that the band plans to have Benedict Fenner produce their new material this summer. However, the station refused to give any more details regarding the interview, citing that listeners will be able to hear the full interview early next month.

Guadalajara date announced

March 15, 2002  |  Comments Off on Guadalajara date announced  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Last Friday, Mexican radio station Orbits 105.7 hosted a telephone interview with Fergal Lawler regarding the band’s upcoming tour. Although the interview will not air until early April, the station was able to advance one piece of information: the Guadalajara tour date will be June 26, 2002. The information was forwarded to the “Salsa de Arándanos Club,” the only Official Cranberries Club located in the country.

Benedict Fenner to produce new material

March 15, 2002  |  Comments Off on Benedict Fenner to produce new material  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

The Cranberries Official Club in Mexico (Salsa de Arándanos Club) is reporting that the band has chosen Benedict Fenner to produce the band’s new material to be recorded this summer. The news is most likely a result of a telephone interview with drummer Fergal Lawler conducted by Mexican radio station Orbits 105.7 last week. The full interview is scheduled to broadcast sometime next month. The new material, to be recorded this summer, is assumed to be released as part of the band’s “Greatest Hits” disc sometime this fall.

Fenner (Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Elvis Costello) co-produced the band’s 1999 album “Bury the Hatchet.” Fenner, whose expertise lies in engineering, not producing, allowed the band to create a much more desired “raw” sound for their fourth work. His selection also allowed the band to have much more creative freedom with the sound and mechanics of the album.

Are The Cranberries planning to follow the same course of action all over again? We’ll have much more information on this topic as Zombieguide Mexico webmaster Sigma returns tomorrow from his Salsa de Arándanos Club meeting tomorrow, where they are expected to give out more details on the subject.

Comcast to celebrate Patty’s day in style

American television cable company Comcast will be airing concerts from both The Cranberries and The Corrs this Sunday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. I’ll toast to that! Here’s an excerpt from their press release:

Comcast Presents The Corrs and the Cranberries in Concert; Programs Available Free, Only to Comcast Customers

PHILADELPHIA, March 13 /PRNewswire/ — This month, Comcast Original Programming celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with back-to-back concerts featuring Irish music sensations The Corrs and the Cranberries on Sunday, March 17 at 9 p.m.

Filmed before a sold-out audience at Dublin’s legendary Landsdowne Road Stadium, The Corrs — siblings Jim, Andrea, Caroline and Sharon Corr — showcase their blend of contemporary pop and rock sounds with traditional Irish musical styles. The band’s debut album, 1995’s “Forgiven Not Forgotten,” was a smash hit in Ireland, France, Canada, Norway, Japan, Denmark and Australia. The quartet’s platinum album, In Blue, features the hit single “Breathless,” which earned a 2001 Grammy Award nomination.

Wrapping up the evening, Comcast and Music Choice present The Cranberries in concert, performing past hits and new songs from their latest release, “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee.” Featured songs include the hit single “Analyse,” as well as favorites from previous albums such as “Linger” and “Zombie”. The concert was recorded at Vicar’s Street Pub in Dublin, Ireland. The quartet recently marked their 10th year in music with a tour promoting their new album.

“TITO” and “TITD” denied for US release

March 14, 2002  |  Comments Off on “TITO” and “TITD” denied for US release  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

A representative for The Cranberries has told Zombieguide this week that which we could already assume: neither “Time is Ticking Out” nor “This is the Day” will be seeing a release in the United States. “The USA never releases any singles by The Cranberries,” the representative told us, but that both singles “will be released in all the usual territories.”

This should come with little surprise to those familiar to release practices in the US, wherein few singles from any artists get a release. Americans were given a rare treat in November with the stateside release of “Analyse,” though it was identical to the European release. Prior to “Analyse,” the United States had not been given a single since 1996’s “Free to Decide/When You’re Gone,” making it the band’s first non-LP release in over five years.

Exclusive: “Treasure Box” cover art

March 12, 2002  |  Comments Off on Exclusive: “Treasure Box” cover art  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

MCA Records in Europe has begun distributing a multi-media presentation to media outlets in Europe to promote “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” and the newest release of “Treasure Box” — which is how our journalist contributor Jessica got ahold of this. The presentation confirms the previously-reported track listing and also shows the cover art for the first time.

The new art for the boxed set is designed by Cally, the band’s original art director. Cally originally produced the art for the first three albums, but has not done any work for The Cranberries since the 1996 release of “To the Faithful Departed.” Since 1999’s “Bury the Hatchet” nearly all of the art design (and website design!) has been in the hands of Pink Floyd veteran Storm Thorgerson.

The boxed set has been subtitled “The Complete Sessions 1991-1999”, following the tradition set by “Bury the Hatchet”‘s rerelease.

Huge thanks to Jessica van Kessel for sending this our way.

Sanremo Festival 2002 report

March 9, 2002  |  Comments Off on Sanremo Festival 2002 report  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Earlier this evening, The Cranberries performed at the Sanremo Festival 2002 in Sanremo, Italy. It was their first public appearence in nearly a week, spending most of the past few days in Paris to record the video for “This is the Day.”

The band performed “Analyse” for the awards ceremony, with a prerecorded background — the music started before Fergal even had the chance to pick up his drumsticks. Dolores wore black bell-bottom pants with white pinstripes in addition to an orange one-sleeved shirt. On her ears were an unusually large mass of earrings, with several hoops and studs in each. After the performance, the host beckoned Dolores to, “Stay here with me.” He then walked to the front of the stage and pulled flowers out of the set to hand them to her in a makeshift bouquet. She smiled, told the audience, “Thanks for the flowers,” while the “official” 3-tiered bouquet arrived in the hands of one of the show’s female hosts. Dolores gladly took them both.

Treasure Box promos released, 1st confirmed tracks

March 8, 2002  |  Comments Off on Treasure Box promos released, 1st confirmed tracks  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Island and Universal Records have released an advanced set of next month’s boxed set “Treasure Box” to media outlets in the UK. We can immediately see that all of the promised “bonus tracks” are common B-sides, which presents a bit of a problem — more on that later.

The reports of both 21 and 22 bonus tracks are both, in a sense, correct. Strictly speaking, the set has 21 bonus tracks. However, “Sorry Son”, a track included on the UK version of “Bury the Hatchet,” but not the US version, could be counted as another B-side. The song is listed here as part of the core “Bury the Hatchet” album.

Here are some of the B-sides that we can confirm will make their way onto the boxed set:

Reason
Liar
What You Were
Away
(They Long to Be) Close to You
I Don’t Need
So Cold in Ireland
Zombie (Camel’s Hump Remix) (by The Orb)
The Picture I View
Cordell
Go Your Own Way
Sorry Son
Baby Blues
Sweetest Thing
Woman Without Pride
Such a Shame
Paparazzi on Mopeds

With so much previously-available material, even the most dedicated fans will find it hard to give away $60 for a set whose only unique value may be aesthetic. Zombieguide will have the full tracklisting right here as soon as its made available, so be sure to check back! There may be some surprises yet…

The channel is available on Dish Network and possibly other services. No word yet on exactly what time The Cranberries will be performing, but Zombieguide will certainly keep you informed. Thanks to Cranfanman for the tip.

“Wake Up” US sales figures

March 7, 2002  |  Comments Off on “Wake Up” US sales figures  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

In a new article on Billboard.com, The Cranberries’ new album “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” has sold 129,000 copies to date in the United States, which would comprise about 10% of the album’s total sales to date. In other chart figures, that article also notes that the album peaked at #46 on the Billboard 200 and that “Analyse” peaked at #26 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Also, the article mentions the upcoming release of “Treasure Box,” but neglects to give any other American release information other than “later this year.” Interestingly, the article claims that the box will house a total of 22 bonus tracks, as opposed to the 21 reported on the band’s official site. However, it’s possible that there was a mistake, so the information should not be held as valid until more details arrive.

“TV Sorrisi & Canzoni,” an Italian TV Guide-like magazine has a new article with a Cranberries picture in its March 2002 issue, written about tomorrow’s San Remo Festival 2002, where the band is scheduled to appear. Also below is a positive review of February 19th’s Copenhagen gig, taken from “Tutto.” Thanks to Mattia Sarzi Madidini for the clarification.

Also, we have new information on The Cranberries’ performance for tomorrow’s San Remo festival. The band is expected to perform one song and give an on-stage interview. The San Remo festival is now in its 52nd year, a combination of an amateur music talent show (where performances are rated), awards show, and of course big-name acts. The question is this: will The Cranberries choose “Time is Ticking Out” or the next single, “This is the Day” to perform?

Saturday’s installment of the awards is scheduled to to broadcast on RAI at 2:40 PM and continue throughout the afternoon. If you miss it, don’t fret — the ceremony will be broadcasted back-to-back repeatedly throughout the day.

“Whisper To A Scream” to air on Bravo

March 6, 2002  |  Comments Off on “Whisper To A Scream” to air on Bravo  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

American Arts channel Bravo is scheduled to air the Irish rock music documentary “From a Whisper to a Scream” on cable later this month. The documentary, which had a budget of over $1 million, originally aired on Irish national television station RTE in 2000. The documentary was then released on DVD and a 3-VHS boxed set in the US almost a year ago, and included extra interview footage with all of the artists, including exclusive interviews with Dolores O’Riordan.

However, don’t think you’re getting away without spending the $30 for the DVD. The version aired on Bravo will in fact be an edited version of the documentary, spanning 120 minutes instead of the full 155 minutes — not to mention the exclusion of the bonus interviews.

The special will air on Bravo on March 17 at 10:00 PM, March 18 at 1:00 AM, and March 18 at 3:00 PM (all times EST). And if you’re wondering if the full DVD is worth the money, check out our review.

Thanks to Cranaddict for the news tip.

The Cranberries were in Dublin Monday, on hand at the IRMA Meteor Awards 2002 ceremony. Unfortunately, the band’s nomination of “Bury the Hatchet” was beaten for “Best Irish Rock Album” (unsurprisingly) by U2’s “All That You Can’t Leave Behind.”

The audience of 4,000 people was given performances by the Lighthouse Family, Enrique Iglesias, and of course The Cranberries, who performed “Time is Ticking Out”. The event raised money for both the Christina Noble Childrens Foundation and the IRMA Trust.

The event will be broadcasted in Ireland on Network 2 on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 9:00 PM (local time).

The Cranberries nominated for Meteor “Best Irish Rock Album”

The IMRA has finally posted its nominations for the 2002 Meteor Awards, to be held tomorrow night in Dublin, Ireland. The Cranberries are nominated for the “Best Irish Rock Album,” surprisingly, for April 1999’s release “Bury the Hatchet”. Exactly why the committee chose the band’s three-year-old release rather than October’s “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” is uncertain, but its possible that the new release is not within the required timeframe for an award. The full nominee list for the award is below:

Best Irish Rock Album
Aslan – Waiting For This Madness To End
The Cranberries – Bury The Hatchet
The Frames – For The Birds
The Revs – Sonic Tonic
U2 – All That You Can’t Leave Behind

With the strong support for U2’s latest release, there isn’t much hope for the others in the category. All is certainly not lost, however. The Cranberries will be appearing at the awards, performing “Time is Ticking Out” live. In addition, there are several other awards to be given away which have no specified nominees, including Lifetime Achievement Award, Humanitarian Award 2002 (“Time is Ticking Out” benefit single, anyone?), and the Irish Industry Award.

American satellite-only channel Music Choice is reairing their Cranberries concert and interview special all throughout the month of March. The special was originally shown on the channel back in October. The channel broadcasts the band’s private show at Vicar Street on November 11th, 2000, with a very pregnant Dolores. The small concert was the first time “Analyse” and “Time is Ticking Out” were played publicly. In addition to the concert, the special has several interview clips recorded to promote “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee.”

For local channel and times, check out the Music Choice website.
Thanks to Gary for the tip.
