The Cranberries might appear on a future Peel Sessions compilation

November 4, 2011  |  1 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

Back in January 1992, The Cranberries recorded a four-track studio session for the John Peel show, more than a year before the release of their first studio album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?. No songs from that session were ever commercially released, but things might change in the next months…

EMI, in partnership with the BBC, released the first volume of a series of Peel Sessions compilations this week. There are no words yet about the release date for the volume covering the early 90’s, nor if a track from The Cranberries will be included.

For their Peel Session, The Cranberries recorded slightly different versions of “Linger”, “Wanted”, “Waltzing Back” and “I Will Always”.

Few years ago, a medium-quality tape recording of this session was featured on an unauthorized bootleg entitled Be with You. Slightly better quality audio files – but nothing compared to the real thing – also circulate in the fan community. Here’s a link (no longer available) for those Cranfans who want it!

For almost 40 years, emerging artists and bands recorded sessions specially intended to be broadcasted on the John Peel show at the BBC. To learn more about the Peel Sessions, visit the Keeping It Peel website.

In Ireland, radio host Dave Fanning from RTÉ (Irish public service broadcaster) gave a similar opportunity to emerging musicians. The Cranberries recorded two sessions for his show in 1991 and 1993. These sessions were (sadly) never commercially released neither. The 1991 session was broadcasted a couple of times in the last few years on the Dan Hegarty show.

“Tomorrow” already a “hot pick” on two U.S. radios

November 3, 2011  |  2 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

According to allaccess.com, KMTT (Seattle) and KINK (Portland, OR) radio stations have already selected “Tomorrow”, The Cranberries first single for Triple-A radios, as one of this week “hot picks” more than 3 weeks before its official radio release date.

Brad Savage, Program Director at WCNR (Charlottesville, VA), also told The Cranberries Press that his station already began airing “Tomorrow” as well. WCNR made a lot of Cranberries fans happy today by posting on its website an acoustic set that Dolores O’ Riordan performed in December 2007.

As for “Show Me the Way”, WRFF (Philadelphia) has been airing it since October 23.

Rare 2007 acoustic show by O’ Riordan hits the Web

November 3, 2011  |  Comments Off on Rare 2007 acoustic show by O’ Riordan hits the Web  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

Charlottesville-based radio station The Corner (WCNR, 106.1) uploaded on its website today a pretty interesting acoustic show Dolores O’ Riordan performed on December 3, 2007 making this a rare chance to hear some of The Cranberries classics and O’ Riordan solo material in an unplugged style.

This eleven-track performance, recorded at the Gravity Lounge during a free Holiday benefit show, is one of the most generous of her 2007 American promo tour. That night, O’ Riordan not only gave the crowd up-tempo acoustic versions of “Free to Decide” and “Dreams” – rarely played that way –, but also three tracks from her first solo album Are You Listening?. To this date, it is the highest attendance in the history of the venue.

Even though she was struggling with a bad cold, O’ Riordan did not miss an occasion to chat with the crowd, talking about her kids, Christmas and the 90’s, laughing at herself for not being able to do math in her head and for not remembering in which year “Free to Decide” was released (she initially said 1993!), and joking about Steve DiMarchi looking for a wife.

A big THANKS to Brad Savage from 106.1 FM The Corner for answering to this request from The Cranberries Press. You can listen to the show in a streaming format and download the mp3 file at The Corner Lounge Listening Room. (link no longer available)

Track list
1. Linger
2. Ode to My Family
3. Ordinary Day
4. Animal Instinct
5. Zombie
6. Free to Decide
7. When You’re Gone
8. Loser
9. When We Were Young
10. Shattered
11. Dreams

How much do we love these acoustic sets, uh?

“Tomorrow” and “Show Me” to team up on U.S. radios

After days of speculation about The Cranberries’ first single for Roses, it looks like we are starting to get some answers. At least, for the U.S. market…

According to Allaccess.com, the band will release “Show Me” under the Alternative radio format on November 8 – as reported yesterday, while “Tomorrow” is to be sent out to radio stations two weeks later (November 21), under the Triple-A format (Adult Alternative).

It looks like Americans will get lots of Cranberries, just in time for Thanksgiving. Turkeys, beware!

“Show Me” on U.S. radios in two weeks?

October 26, 2011  |  Comments Off on “Show Me” on U.S. radios in two weeks?  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

Just when we thought that The Cranberries had finally selected their first single for Roses, things became a bit more uncertain today!
After several reports indicating that “Tomorrow” will be the official comeback single for the band, Allaccess.com now lists “Show Me The Way” for a radio release on November 8 under “Impacting Songs”.

Is this a change in the marketing strategy due to the many positive reviews of “Show Me The Way” online since its giveaway release? Is North America getting a different single than the rest of the World? Too many questions, so few answers…

Forgotten version of “Zombie” comes back from the grave

October 22, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

Halloween is just around the corner and it looks like zombies are crawling back from the grave! We have found today a slightly rougher studio version of The Cranberries 1994 hit, “Zombie”, which seems to have been forgotten by most of us.

The Radio 1 FM Sessions Volume 2 – Cassette artwork

Recorded for a BBC Radio 1 Evening Session in 1994, this version of “Zombie” was released in 1995 on a giveaway cassette (yes, cassette!) with UK magazine Vox. To our knowledge, this is the only release of this Evening Session version.

Back in 1995, two other songs from the Evening Session (“Empty” and “I Can’t Be With You”) were released on an “I Can’t Be With You” single. The Cranberries’ Evening Session was first broadcasted on September 26, 1994 on BBC Radio 1.

Here is a downloadable mp3 file for the fans to enjoy!

“Conduct” becomes “Conduct Yourself”; “Raining in my Heart” is reggae-infused

New bits of information on some Roses tracks

Cooking Vinyl has just updated its site with a section about The Cranberries, in which new information is revealed about some tracks from Roses. Here are some interesting excerpts:

The result is Roses, 11 new songs from The Cranberries. Produced by the band’s old friend and collaborator Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur and more recently Kaiser Chiefs) the songs on Roses sound like nuggets buried deep inside The Cranberries’ soul harking back to the freshness and acoustic originality of the band’s first two albums, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Cant We? and No Need To Argue.

The songs vary in pace and mood, from the soft and summery “Fire and Soul” to the reggae infused “Raining In My Heart” and the sweeping storm that rages within “Conduct Yourself.”

Some of the songs from the latest album date back to the days before they paused The Cranberries in 2003, like “Astral Projection” and “Raining In My Heart”. Others come from the sound checks in 2010, like “Serendipity,” “Conduct Yourself,” and the seize-the-day themed first single “Tomorrow.” But there were still a few surprises at the last minute during recording at Metalworks in Toronto in April and May of 2011. On an evening off as Dolores was going in to watch the movie Limitless, she listened to a melody Noel had saved for her. She loved it instantly and later that night wrote the lyrics to it calling the song “Roses”.

Thanks to Jury and Litsa for the info.

“Show Me The Way” is not the first “Roses” single

October 20, 2011  |  Comments Off on “Show Me The Way” is not the first “Roses” single  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

In a tweet message today, Noel Hogan confirmed that “Tomorrow” will be the first official single from the Roses album and that “Show Me The Way” is only a free-download track. Some media falsely reported yesterday that SMTW was the first single of the upcoming album. Thanks to Dolitsa for asking Noel.

Earlier today, Hogan posted the first review of “Show Me The Way” published online on Indie Rock Reviews, which is quite positive:

If you have just recently crawled from under a rock then you might have missed that Ireland alternative rock legends, The Cranberries, are back and offering up “Show Me The Way”, their first single from the bands new album ‘Roses’, which comes out Valentines Day, 2012. Their 3 previous track samples have been quite the tease, but now they’ve gone and given us a proper dosage of pure Cranberries genius. ‘Roses’ is shaping up to potentially be one of the best albums The Cranberries have ever released and should have the band back in the limelight, and that’s just where we want them.

Half disappointing night for Cranfans

October 18, 2011  |  Comments Off on Half disappointing night for Cranfans  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

While everyone in the Cranberries community was expecting the 1993 Dave Fanning Session tonight, RTÉ 2fm broadcasted the 1991 session, which was partly known from the fans.

Besides from “Dreams” “Uncertain” and “Reason”, which had been broadcast on Dan Hegarty’s show in 2010, the Irish radio host dug out of the vault “Put Me Down” for the first time since its first broadcast in 1991.

It looks like there was a bit confusion on the RTÉ 2fm site, which previously announced the broadcast of the 1993 session last Thurday.

Radiohost Dan Hegarty was kind enough to clear out the situation on air and told listeners that he will try to find the 1993 session and broadcast it eventually.

The 1993 Fanning Session includes two unreleased tracks entitled “False” and “Like You Used To”.

You can listen to the complete 1991 Session on the Fanning Sessions Archive website.

“Show Me The Way” possibly leaked!

October 17, 2011  |  1 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

What looks like another technical error on TheCranberriesTV YouTube channel possibly got “Show Me The Way” leaked. Late Monday night, subscribers to the YouTube channel received (yet) another notice for the upload of the “Show Me The Way” video online.

But this time, it looks like a lucky cranberries.me member (Cristian) got the chance to extract the song before the video became private again. Describing it as “Animal Instinct”-ish, Cristian wrote in the cranberries.me forum that he decided to keep the song to himself for a day, giving the band some time (and respect) to release it themselves sooner for everyone to enjoy.

Fin Chambers to be featured on Mono Band’s second album

October 14, 2011  |  2 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  Mono Band

Noel Hogan posted a first picture of the Mono Band recording session via his Twitter account today with the words “Mono band vocals”.

It looks like the guest vocalist is none other than Fin Chambers, who was featured on “Release”, from Mono Band’s first album, and the free-download track “She’s so Blue”.

Hogan added another picture later today and confirmed that Chambers was recording 3 songs for the album.

No other guest vocalists have been confirmed for the second album. It is also unknown if unreleased tracks from the first album sessions will be used.

On March 15, Hogan posted a mysterious tweet:

“Listening to a new mix of Mono Band ‘Flame’ by Session Leopard. Really liking it, will have it online soon.”

“Flame” is an unreleased song recorded with singer Kate Havenevik. Back in late 2007, Hogan also talked about releasing the orignal version of this song online in the news section of the Mono Band website.

Neither the original version nor the Session Leopard mix were released on Internet.

Thanks to Cappuccino, a reader who left a comment in the discussion section, for the info about “Flame”.

1993 Dave Fanning Session to air on October 18th

October 13, 2011  |  1 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

A first chance in almost 20 years to hear back “Like You Used To” and “False”

RTÉ radio host Dan Hegarty confirmed tonight on his blog that he is going to broadcast The Cranberries’ complete 1993 Dave Fanning Session next Tuesday. This session was recorded shortly after the release of the band’s first album, Everybody Else is Doing so Why Can’t We?

During an interview with Dave Fanning few days before the first 1993 broadcast, singer Dolores O’ Riordan and drummer Fergal Lawler explained that they were recording a new version of “Wanted” for that session, plus three new songs. It is likely that those songs are “False”, “Like You Used To” and “The Icicle Melts”. The latter was recorded again a year after for the band’s second album No Need to Argue, while the first two were never commercially released.

Few weeks ago, some hardcore fans from the cranberries.me community joined forces to ask the Irish radio host to broadcast this session. Thanks to all who participated!!

And a big CHEERS to Dan Hegarty!

Be sure to tune in to Dan’s show, next Tuesday night (October 18) at 11 p.m. (Ireland time).

Note (October 18): There have been some confusion on RTÉ 2fm website. The session broadcast tonight was the 1991 session (“Dreams”, “Uncertain”, “Reason” and “Put Me Down”) and not the 1993 one, announced last Thursday.

Last June, Gohan Records revealed that Hogan was working on a new 4-track Mono Band EP. According to today’s tweet, it looks like the EP has now become an album.

There is no word yet on who will be the vocalists on the upcoming album. The 2005 album featured tracks by singers Alexandra Hamnede, Richard Walters, Kate Havnevik, Nicolas Leroux, Fin Chambers and Angie Hart.

Mono Band is a side project started by Hogan in 2004, during The Cranberries hiatus. You can buy Mono Band’s first album on Gohan Records website.

Acoustic versions of “Analyse” and “Linger” resurface

October 10, 2011  |  2 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

Back in August 2001, The Cranberries embarked on a U.S.promo tour, visiting several radio stations to promote the upcoming release of Wake Up and Smell the Coffee with live performances, most of them played in an acoustic format.

Thanks to a couple of e-mails sent to KBCO – World Class Rock, we are proud to tell you that you can now listen back to “Linger” and “Analyse”, the two songs the band performed at this Boulder (Colorado) radio station on August 16, 2001. A big thanks to the personnel of the 97.3 FM.

This version of “Analyse” was also featured on KBCO Studio C – Volume 13, a locally-sold charity compilation back in 2001.

During the 1990’s and early 2000’s, The Cranberries recorded many other acoustic performances during promotional tours, amongst them a MTV unplugged episode and unforgettable versions of “I Can’t Be With You” (2 Meter Session – 1993), “False”, “Sunday” (KCRW – 1993), “Animal Instinct” and “In the Ghetto” (BBC Radio 1 – 1999). The idea of releasing a compilation regrouping the best of these acoustic performances would surely please tones of Cranberries fans. Santa Claus, are you listening?

In the meantime, you can listen to both KBCO acoustic versions of “Linger” and “Analyse” and a short interview on the radio station website, and tell us about your all-time favorite acoustic performance by the ‘Berries in the discussion box below.

“Tomorrow” could be really late!

October 10, 2011  |  2 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

According to German music site Rockszene, the release of Roses’ first single “Tomorrow” is scheduled for January 27, only 2 weeks before the album hit the shelves.
In a music industry more and more focused on digital singles issued months before the release of an album, it seems like a strange marketing strategy for a band that was absent of the musical scene for so long.

Remember that this information was not confirmed by the band. Later last week, O’ Riordan told Billboard the band has not yet made a definitive choice about the first single. First scheduled for an October release, “Tomorrow” was first pushed back in late 2011, according the the band’s official website.

O’ Riordan and Hogan “were sending each other ideas on and off” during hiatus

October 9, 2011  |  1 Comments  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

While Roses release date continues to make the headline all over the world on various news sites -mainly reporting what had already been said on Billboard.com– Australian site AAABackstage published a new short interview with the band last week.

During this interview, guitarist Noel Hogan explained that he and lead singer Dolores O’ Riordan continued to share ideas for new music during the band’s six-year hiatus.

O’ Riordan also talked about how unique making music with the band and producer Stephen Street is. “Having recorded two albums with various different musicians during our hiatus, I could clearly see that Noel and Mike have a unique way of creating chords and Ferg keeps it together in a subtle way.  We had a blast in the studio, Stephen was in his zone and it came together rather quickly.”

Lucky Australians will be the first ones to get a hand on a copy of Roses – to be released on Shock Records/Cooking Vinyl on February 10, 2012 – and to hear the new songs on tour, in March 2012.

Ireland has another “Reason” to love The Cranberries

October 7, 2011  |  Comments Off on Ireland has another “Reason” to love The Cranberries  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

It looks like Ireland has another “Reason” to love The Cranberries. After being broadcast a few times in the last year on Ireland’s national radio RTÉ 2fm, we have words that the 1993 b-side “Reason” was also played on Limerick’s Live 95 FM during Alan Jacques’s LimRock Special last May. The radio host has been nominated for a PPi Radio award last month for this special.

During his May 19, 2010 show, RTÉ 2fm’s radio host Dan Hegarty caused quite a commotion in The Cranberries fan community by airing three songs (“Dreams”, “Uncertain” and “Reason”) taken from the long-lost 1991 Dave Fanning Session. The Fanning Session version of “Reason” was broadcast a couple of times after that on Hegarty’s show.

“Reason” is not the only b-side which got a life on its own. In 1995 “Liar”, which was first released on the 1992 “Dreams” single, was featured on the Empire Records soundtrack and have been part of The Cranberries concert setlist for many shows up to now. Both songs are available on the complete session edition of Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?

You can listen to the three songs from the 1991 Dave Fanning Session on the The Dave Fanning Sessions Archive website.

Billboard.com reveals “Roses” release date and tracklist

October 7, 2011  |  Comments Off on Billboard.com reveals “Roses” release date and tracklist  |  by The Cranberries Press Archives  |  The Cranberries

In an exclusive interview with Billboard.com on October 5, lead singer Dolores O’ Riordan revealed that Roses, The Cranberries sixth studio album and first since the 2001 release of Wake Up and Smell the Coffee, will be released on February 14, 2012 –just in time for Valentine Day– on Downtown Records/Cooking Vinyl in the U.S. and on Cooking Vinyl worldwide (February 13).

O’ Riordan also told Billboard that the band has not yet made a definitive choice about the first single although she favors “Tomorrow”. Earlier this summer, the band posted a preview clip of “Tomorrow” on their official website, mentioning that the song would be released as the first single later in 2011.

Finally, Billboard.com announced “Roses” tracklist, revealing two new songs which were not previously included in the list of songs recorded at the Metalworks studio (Toronto,Canada) in April and May. It is likely that those two new titles –“Losing My Mind” and “Waiting in Walthamstow”– were recorded during the London session last June.

Here’s the tracklist for “Roses”:

1. “Conduct”
2. “Tomorrow”
3. “Fire & Soul”
4. “Raining In My Heart”
5. “Losing My Mind”
6. “Schizophrenic Playboys”
7. “Waiting in Walthamstow”
8. “Show Me”
9. “Astral Projections”
10. “So Good”
11. “Roses”

Sanctuary Records closes; Dolores without a label?

September 6, 2007  |  Comments Off on Sanctuary Records closes; Dolores without a label?  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

The UK’s The Guardian reports today that Universal Music has decided to shut down the Sanctuary Records UK label, leaving Dolores O’Riordan without a record label.

This closure follows Sanctuary’s closing of its US division at the end of June. Universal Music bought Sanctuary, which has been having financial struggles

for the past few years, for 44.5 million pounds in August.

Universal said in a statement, “Sanctuary Records UK division will no longer continue as a stand-alone, frontline record label. Consultations with employees have begun to minimise redundancies as a result of the restructuring.”

August 18, 2007  |  Comments Off on Billboard reviews “When We Were Young”  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

Music industry magazine Billboard has given a favorable review to “When We Were Young,” the new second single from Dolores O’Riordan’s Are You Listening? Here’s what they had to say:

When We Were Young
DOLORES O’RIORDAN
Producer(s): Dolores O’Riordan, Richard Chycki Genre: POP
Label: Sanctuary

The first solo single from Cranberries vocalist Dolores O’Riordan, “Ordinary Day,” was an elegant bow for her album “Are You Listening,” reminiscent of pop classic “Linger.” Enough of that, eh? Follow-up “When We Were Young” is a closer reminder of her “Zombie” signature, with vocal octave-jumping and a haughty gambol between electric guitars and percussion. Radio hesitated to react the first time around, but with the brassy approach of “Young,” O’Riordan has potential to charm adults who know her on a first-name basis. Active rock, as seldom as it indulges the ladies, would also do well to usher this talent back to active duty.”Chuck Taylor

Avril Lavigne chooses Cranberries, Marilyn Manson

Target is releasing a compilation album with 10 songs chosen by Avril Lavigne as part of their series, “Influences”. One of the songs listed is “Dreams” by The Cranberries. This may catch a few Cranberries fans oguard.

Another complete shocker is her decision to include “This Is The New Shit” by Marilyn Manson – seeing that this is a target release it will most probably be the censored version.

There are also the not-so surprising appearances by punk bands Blink-182 and The Distillers on the compilation.

Spin mentions Cranberries in cover article

August 5, 2007  |  Comments Off on Spin mentions Cranberries in cover article  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

US rock magazine Spin mentioned The Cranberries in the first paragraph of the August 2007 cover article on Interpol. The magazine mentioned that “Linger” played at a Dallas Hooters restaurant — where the interview took place — and later went on to contrast the two bands.

David Peisner wrote in the article,

The Hooters in downtown Dallas is not just any Hooters. It is, [guistarist Daniel] Kessler informs me, the largest Hooters in the world. In his black suit, black sweater-vest, and dark sunglesses, the chatty New York vegetarian strieks an odd figure in a chain restaurant known primarily for large-breasted, skimpily outfitted waitresses and chicken wings. Neon beer signs cover the walls, a rerun of the Coca-Cola 600 from Lowe’s Motor Speedway beams from the TV overhead, and the sound system blares inoensive radio-rock staples, including Blind Melon’s “No Rain,” the Cranberries’ “Linger,” and Dave Matthews Band’s “The Space Between.”

Peisner later goes on to write that Interpol are not (yet) at that same level of universal appeal as the aforementioned songs, but would like to be.

The middle of the country is where Interpol need to make their presence felt if they’re going to graduate from their post as New York City’s well-dressed, brooding indie-rock mascots and become, well, a band whose songs might be played over the sound system at the largest Hooters in the world.

“When We Were Young” music video now online!

Surprise! Dolores O’Riordan has already filmed the video for “When We Were Young” with longtime collaborator Olivier Dahan and it’s online now for viewing.

Production company U-Man Films has put the video in Quicktime format, along with a few screencaps, online on their site. Download Dolores O’Riordan’s “When We Were Young” music video here. (LINK NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

With its gritty green color scheme, on-rails camera, and lots of up-to-no- good vagrant extras, the video looks almost as if it could have been made on the same set as The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Ava Adore.” Dolores, for her part, wears plenty of bling to help her remember “how things just seemed so ezah.”

Cranberries fans will remember that Dahan directed the videos for The Cranberries’ “Salvation,” “Promises,” “Animal Instinct,” and “This is the Day.”

Big thanks to Maxence for the tip.

Los Angeles may be rescheduled for November

MySpace user “Ben & Jan” posted the following note on Dolores O’Riordan’s MySpace:

UPDATE: We just spoke with a rep at the LA House of Blues and she said the band is trying to reschedule (yay!) possibly sometime in November, but more word will not come until midday Monday at the earliest. If we hear anything more we’ll share!

Still no official announcement of rescheduling the Los Angeles show (or the DC one, for that matter), but we’ll have any official announcements posted here on Zombieguide. (Thanks to GlenninLA for the tip.)

Amy Lee of Evanescence talks Dolores’s tour

July 20, 2007  |  Comments Off on Amy Lee of Evanescence talks Dolores’s tour  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

Singer Amy Lee of Evanescence said in an interview posted online today that she recently got to see Dolores O’Riordan on tour — “it was awesome,” she said. Lee added, “I really like her new music.”

Here’s the excerpt:

Q) With all of the bands getting back together like The Police and The Spice Girls, which one are you most excited for?

A) The Police, we’re going. We’re going to the New York show and we were trying to get tickets. This has been the big talk of the band and crew for the past couple of months is how we’re going to get Police tickets because they all sold out instantly. We finally got our hands on Police tickets and Terry just went and said it was incredible and he wants to go again. I think Tim is going this weekend so everybody, I think, has jumped on and everyone’s found their own way to get to The Police. That’s the one that everyone’s been talking about.

Q) Are there any other ones that you saw?

A) Actually, last night I went and saw, let me try to say her name right – Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries and it was awesome. She’s incredible! I loved The Cranberries and I was way too young to go really see them and they didn’t come to our town. It was really cool to see her, but I really like her new music. It’s really cool! It’s strange and it gets really heavy sometimes, but it’s very sincere and I think she’s awesome. So, I don’t know if you call that reuniting, because it’s not that, but it’s kind of the same thing. I thought she was incredible.

Fillmore staff: San Francisco concert “still on”

July 20, 2007  |  Comments Off on Fillmore staff: San Francisco concert “still on”  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

A staff member for San Francisco’s Fillmore just told Zombieguide Forumsmember Hollywood Sav over the phone that “As far as we know, [the concert]’s still on for tonight.”

Fans have been worried whether tonight’s concert (and indeed, further shows) would be canceled due to Graham Hopkins’s medical issue that canceled last night’s concert in Los Angeles.

Ireland’s Hot Press reports that Graham was discharged from the hospital earlier today.

Hot Press also writes, “An official statement on the continuation of the tour is to be released shortly, as Dolores & her team assess the situation.”

Another medical emergency cancels Los Angeles

July 20, 2007  |  Comments Off on Another medical emergency cancels Los Angeles  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

Drummer Graham Hopkins had a seizure on stage last night during Dolores O’Riordan’s show in Los Angeles. The rest of Dolores O’Riordan’s tour may be canceled, although we are waiting for an official announcement. Update 9:08 PM EST: Looks like tonight’s San Francisco show will go on as scheduled. Dolores’s crew is unpacking at the venue and a queue is forming in front of the hall. (Thanks Sue and Anna.)

New Zombie wrote on the Zombieguide Forums,

I just got back. I seriously thought the drummer (Graham Hopkins, I think) was going to die. It was not a pretty sight and it was not a fun night…I hope he makes a full recovery. There is no replacement drummer. Refunds will be issued at the point of purchase (yes for LA too as she only got through about 3-4 songs). The rest of the tour is CANCELLED (not postponed) and an announcement to that effect will be made tomorrow.

The drummer had a seizure right on stage. They killed the lights and lowered a screen. He had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital after what seemed like 20 minutes of medical treatment while he was laying on stage.

bendomino writes,

To let everyone know, my wife and I were there at the concert in LA tonight. To clarify the account posted on Perez Hilton’s site, Dolores wasn’t screaming, she was calmly asking for the lights to be turned down and then an ambulance. There was no chaos, and we didn’t see any police, only the ambulance she asked for. Sunset was not shut down either. I applaud everyone at the event for handling the situation as best they could, there was never a threat to ours or anyone’s safety. The Perez Hilton comment posted is totally blown out of proportion. We hope and pray the drummer is ok, by the way his name is Graham Hopkins and he is a renowned Irish drummer who has played with many bands in the past. In light of the news that the rest of the tour is probably cancelled, we wish the band the best and look forward to their next visit in LA, which hopefully is in the near future.

For those that haven’t had a chance to meet him, Graham is a wonderful and all-around awesome guy, and we hope he gets better as soon as possible.

Whew! After a week of travel, I’ve finally had a minute to sit down and sort through a few hundred photos that we took at Dolores O’Riordan’s concerts in New York and Philadelphia. A sampling of the best ones are now available on Flickr. Here are Zombieguide’s Flickr sets of Dolores O’Riordan @ New York’s Irving Plaza 07.10.2007 and Dolores O’Riordan @ Philadelphia’s Fillmore at the TLA 07.13.2007

Speaking of tours, we want to take a second to once again recommend Felipe’s site Cranberries Shows, where you can find lots of useful stuff like past setlists and tour photos. If you have setlists, merchandise photos, or ticket scans from the current tour, send it to Felipe!

Injury cancels Washington, DC show

July 12, 2007  |  Comments Off on Injury cancels Washington, DC show  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

A dental injury has canceled Dolores O’Riordan’s planned show at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC tonight.

A member of the crew told Zombieguide that Dolores broke her front tooth on a Japanese rice cracker at dinner. She did not show up for the 5:00 PM soundcheck as planned, and evidently never left her tour bus. Concert goers saw crew returning Dolores’s clothes and personal effects to the tour bus after 7:30.

Staff members for the 9:30 Club announced the cancellation around 8:00 (first announced as a postponement, later changed to a cancellation).

A person close to Dolores reported that she was in quite a lot of pain, but “were lining up dentists as we speak.”

It is currently unknown if Dolores will perform tomorrow night’s scheduled Philadelphia show. Crew members were preparing for the trip to Philadelphia, but did not know if it would occur as scheduled.

Fans who bought tickets will receive full refunds from their place of purchase through July 27th according to verbal announcements at the show and a post on the 9:30 Club website. Major online ticket vendors such as Ticketmaster should refund automatically.

We wish the best for Dolores and hope she gets fixed up soon!

Dolores in GayWired: “I love the gay community”

GayWired has a straightforward Q&A with Dolores posted. The interview hits all the same topics as the other interviews floating around, with the addition of some Q&A about gay rights, specifically gay marriage in Dolores’s part- time home of Canada.

Here it is:

Ten Minutes with Dolores O’Riordan 06.22.07
Who can ever forget Dolores O’Riordan’s glorious vocal gymnastics? As the leader of mega-successful alt-pop band the Cranberries, O’Riordan took listeners on countless musical joy rides, her crystalline instrument rising slowly from a whisper to a gorgeous and cathartic emotional cry. Still in awesome vocal form, O’Riordan has just released her first-ever solo album Are You Listening? on Sanctuary Records. Co-produced by Youth and Dan Broadbeck, the eagerly anticipated album is a 12-track tour de force and marks her first release in four years.

Cranberries “couldn’t do another Linger or Dreams”

June 30, 2007  |  Comments Off on Cranberries “couldn’t do another Linger or Dreams”  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

“The Cranberries couldn’t couldn’t do another ‘Linger’ or ‘Dreams,’ because you can’t really do the same thing twice,” said Dolores O’Riordan in an interview published yesterday in New Jersey’s Courier-Post, explaining why she left the band.

At the same time, she’s quick to point out that there will be plenty of Cranberries material in her live shows during the upcoming US tour. The article in the South Jersey paper is specifically to promote the Philadelpha show on July 13th. (We’ll be there!)

“The Cranberries stuff is great and I still like to sing those songs,” she said via phone from Greece. “They bring back memories and it’s light-hearted now to sing them.”

Here’s the article text, as posted in the forums by CordellNJ:

Former Cranberries frontwoman Dolores O’Riordan performs at the Fillmore at the TLA on July 13 with her four-member band. During her years with the Cranberries, O’Riordan, 35, helped the band sell more than 40 million records between 1993 and 1999. The group, which released four albums during that time, had it’s biggest hit single with 1994’s “Zombie.” This month, O’Riordan embarks on her first U.S tour in more than 5 years to plug her just released solo debut album, “Are You Listening?” The records earned raves as a striking return, “With angular chords and O’Riordan’s distinctively powerful vocals.” Written and recorded over 4 years, the album is largly inspired by personal experience. Her name, speaking by phone from greece, said she “Didn’t feel any pressure at all” in making the CD. “The more success you have, the more pressure you aquire.” She says. “The Cranberries couldn’t couldn’t do another ‘Linger’ or ‘Dreams,’ because you can’t really do the same thing twice. But after I stepped away from all that, and just focused on being a fulltime mom, music became a hobby to me again, and the pressure disappeared. “Music then was truely just for theraputic purposes.” The resulting effect, O’Riordan says, was “more experimental than her work with the Cranberries, while still retaining her melodic flare. For her solo tour, O’Riordan will be backed by a four member band, and plans to do a mix of old and new material. “The Cranberries stuff is great and I still like to sing those songs,” she said. “They bring back memories and it’s light-hearted now to sing them.”

It’s official: The Cranberries are getting their first-ever placement in a video game when Singstar 90s releases for the PlayStation 2 in August in Australia and other PAL territories. (Unless, of course, you want to count the Doors and Windows CD-ROM as a game.)

Sony has just confirmed the ocial lineup of songs for the latest in the karaoke series, which carries an impressive lineup of tracks from artists ranging from The Cure to The Cardigans. Singstar 90s is due out in Australia on August 7, 2007. The game has not yet been announced for North America or other territories, but Zombieguide will post in case that changes.

Dolores O’Riordan on cover of “Irish Examiner” USA

June 30, 2007  |  Comments Off on Dolores O’Riordan on cover of “Irish Examiner” USA  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

Dolores O’Riordan is on the cover of the June 13th issue of the American edition of the Irish Examiner, plus the full interview is online at their site. (LINK NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

Here are some good quotes pulled from the interview:

“I’d a good break, and I’ve the hunger back, the whole vibe is back. Most of the material (for the new album) was written in Canada. In winter, there’s four feet of snow there. It’s very cold, but very inspiring. I have a piano in my house, and I use the weather, the ever-changing climate to inspire me while writing,” she claimed.

The music scene in general however, has changed a great deal while she’s been away. “The emphasis is not on CDs anymore, it’s more on Ipods. It’s always changing, when we were teens, it went from vinyl to cassette. Good music is good music though.”

Dolores, discussing her cameo in Click, also revealed that she isn’t as interested in acting now as she was just a few years ago. (”I want to play some kind of femme fatale – curly hair, big breasts and a tight dress. I imagine it would be like ‘Hollywood! I’m here – Dolores O’Riordan in person!’” she said in 2002.)

Of her cinematic venture, she told us: “Adam (Sandler) is a big fan apparently. It was a blast, we spent ten days (on location). There’s a lot of waiting around for your scene. It’s a good laugh, and very interesting behind the scenes. Every morning, we’d three and a half hours doing make up, it makes you aware of so many different forms of art.”

Of a future in acting however, she said: “Maybe when I’m older, if it felt good at the time. I did like the whole experience, but you’d have to move lock, stock and barrel to Los Angeles.”

It looks like back issues of the cover article may be available for ordering. We’ve emailed the Irish Examiner about it and will update if you can order online.

Lastly, the Irish Examiner has some juicy circa 2000-2002 hi-res photos that you obsessive picture collectors can grab here and here.

Dolores in The Star: “AYL” is a “therapeutic diary”

June 28, 2007  |  Comments Off on Dolores in The Star: “AYL” is a “therapeutic diary”  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

Dolores O’Riordan told Toronto’s the Star that the process of writing and recording Are You Listening? was therapeutic for her.

She describes the process of writing over a period of four years as a “hobby and a kind of escape” from both the good and bad elements in her life.

The Star is quick to point out that although it was written in seclusion at home, the album is loaded with heavy themes of death and insecurity — something we pointed out in our own review.

Here’s what The Toronto Star commented:

Are You Listening?, released in May, didn’t turn out to be a tip- toeing ode to domestic bliss, though. Minus the odd, sweet- natured ode to O’Riordan’s toddler daughter, it’s long on themes of death and escape while the music, like that of the Cranberries, is sometimes startlingly heavy and roiling.

Dolores also revealed that producer Dan Brodbeck actually moved into the basement of her home in Howth to work on the tracks on ProTools in O’Riordan’s spare time. She said:

“It was great because one minute we could be recording and the next I could be mashing the potatoes. He was brilliant,” says O’Riordan. “The set-up was downstairs and he’d be down there working all the time, so I’d go down and say, `I have an idea’ and I’d put it down and leave him to come up with some percussion while I went upstairs to peel some spuds. He only came upstairs when he smelled dinner cooking. Otherwise he was in the studio.”

You can read the whole interview at The Toronto Star or below after the jump. Thanks to Tara and others for the tip.

2nd single “When We Were Young” in charts

June 26, 2007  |  Comments Off on 2nd single “When We Were Young” in charts  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  Dolores O'Riordan

It looks like “When We Were Young” will indeed be the second single from Dolores O’Riordan’s Are You Listening? The song has just entered the charts at Otvoreni Radio (www.otvoreni.hr) in Croatia at #19.

This comes after much speculation on the Zombieguide Forums about which song would follow “Ordinary Day.”

Otvoreni Radio was the first reported station to play the debut single “Ordinary Day” way back in February, so it’s no surprise to us that they’re the first station to pick up the second single.

To those at Sanctuary: excellent choice! Maybe “October” for the third single, hmm?

Thanks to Sale for the news.
