“Analyse” goes #1 on the Cadena 40

November 17, 2001  |  Comments Off on “Analyse” goes #1 on the Cadena 40  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

On the Cadena 40, the most important radio airplay countdown in Spain, the single “Analyse” has gone to #1 after a long, slow, struggle to the top. The long climb is a traditional one — “Promises” hit #1 only a week before the release of the second single, “Animal Instinct”. Thus far, “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” has had an overwhelmingly positive response in Spain, more so than any other country.

TITO director, remix announced

In an update on the Official Cranberries Website, the director for “Time is Ticking Out” has been announced. More Spanish print interviews

November 10, 2001  |  Comments Off on More Spanish print interviews  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

“One day you’re a bitch, another day you’re a goddess,” said Dolores O’Riordan about the press to MTV Rockumentary in 1996. Apparently, not much has changed — except that now she’s both on the same day. Case in point? The new issue of the Spanish edition “Rolling Stone”.

On one page in the magazine, we have a “Hot Interview” with Dolores, obviously complimentary. See below.

In another section of the magazine, we have a section called “Ojo de Pez”. The article claims that The Cranberries made a pact with Island founder, and “anti-Christ of the industry”, Christ Blackwell, and as a result, Dolores’s two children are “two demons”. And what’s sure to make fans angrier, the paragraph claims that the rumors of Dolores’s anorexia were actually true. This is either a blantent sign of lack of research, or just an intentional attack on the band.

Once you’re finally over all of that, check out another article in the free magazine “MMM”, titled “Analysis from the Heart”.

The Cranberries to play for Pope John Paul II?

October 31, 2001  |  Comments Off on The Cranberries to play for Pope John Paul II?  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

A little birdie has just told us that The Cranberries have been invited to play before Pope John Paul II on December 15th. The Vatican hosts a concert every year of prominent musicians every year, each playing one or two songs. The request was said to be an enormous surprise for the band, which they happily accepted. The annual concert is broadcasted prominently on Italian television.

Although the news has been spread throughout several Italian news outlets, we await official confirmation of the news.

December Providence date announced

October 31, 2001  |  Comments Off on December Providence date announced  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Pollstar has posted a newly-announced date for the upcoming American radio tour, this time for Providence, RI on December 10th at the Dunkin Donuts Civic Center. Tickets for this gig should soon become available via Ticketmaster.

In addition, Pollstar has posted a new article today, cementing the validity of these new dates:

What Are The Holidays Without Cranberries?

The Cranberries will mark the release of their new album with some holiday radio shows in the States. The group’s new album, Wake Up And Smell The Coffee, is just out and they don’t expect to launch a real tour until next year, but the radio gigs should give fans a preview of what’s to come.

The Irish band hasn’t done a proper North American tour since 1999’s amphitheatre outing with Collective Soul. Even last year, the Cranberries were more likely to make headlines for canceling shows than playing them.

In all fairness, the group has forged ahead, defying naysayers and the odds. They first hit the charts and the road in the early ‘90s when grunge ruled and the Cranberries jangly pop hits were an anomaly.

It wasn’t long before rumors began flying that singer Delores O’Riordan was going to leave the band for a solo career. Actually, there was an O’Riordan rumor to fit every occasion: she was anorexic, having a nervous breakdown, or in rehab – depending on the day of the week.

When the Cranberries canceled their 1996 world tour, the multiplatinum-selling group seemed to have reached the end.

“We all went through a bad time, but the hardest time for me was ’95-’96, the ‘anorexia’ time,” the singer recently told The Irish Independent newspaper.

“It wasn’t anorexia. It was serious depression,” she said. “I was just really burnt out from touring. It was just awful because I couldn’t handle being on my own and I couldn’t handle not having a crowd around me and I couldn’t handle not having anything to do. It was really weird and really difficult. I took a while to kind of relax, because we had just been, ‘Go, go, go, go, go,’ for years. Out of school and then just woah!”

Things have slowed down considerably since then for the band. The members have grown up, started families and gained new perspective. They also continued to release new albums and tour, though their efforts were largely ignored in the States.

Then late last year, the Cranberries canceled the last four dates on their world tour. It was understandable, though. O’Riordan was well into her second pregnancy and was advised by her doctor to return home. Her daughter was born in January and the Cranberries were soon in the studio, working on the new album.

In September, the terrorist attacks interrupted a promotional tour of Europe and caused them to yank the video for the first single, “Analyse,” and re-edit it. The clip originally depicted O’Riordan performing on top of a building while planes flew over skyscrapers in the background.

Wake Up And Smell The Coffee hit U.S. stores October 23 and those who buy the album can stream a bonus track off the band’s obsessively updated Web site, www.cranberries.com.

“We wanted to offer our fans something unique for buying this new album,” guitarist Noel Hogan said.

More exclusive material will be added to the site during the next year as the band continues to promote the album.

Fergal: “Time” single, remixes confirmed

October 31, 2001  |  Comments Off on Fergal: “Time” single, remixes confirmed  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

The official page has updated with Fergal’s response to more fans’ questions, this time with some very newsworthy responses. Firstly, he confirms that the track “Time is Ticking Out” will be the second single, with remixes of the song also planned. The band is considering adding a short acoustic segment to their upcoming tour, as the band had done in early 1995. He also responds to a question (submitted by none other than myself!) regard the two “old songs” recorded for “Wake Up”. The first was “Dying Inside”, written on the “No Need to Argue” Tour in 1994-1995. “Do You Know” was the second, written circa 1997, perhaps at the Metalworks Studios, which spawned “Animal Instinct”, “Shattered”, and “Desperate Andy”. For lots more details, check it out for yourself!

NME: Dolores not “in a hurry” to visit US

October 26, 2001  |  Comments Off on NME: Dolores not “in a hurry” to visit US  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

In an article posted on New Music Express, earlier today, Dolores discussed the situation in America (speaking to “The Mirror”). This jeopardizes yesterday’s report that the band will do a December radio tour in the US.

DOLORES ‘LINGER’S OVER US PROBLEM

THE CRANBERRIES frontwoman DOLORES O’RIORDAN has revealed that she fears touring the US following the terrorist attacks on the country.

The Cranberries are a huge draw in the US, a country where they have sold the majority of their 33 million albums. However, O’Riordan now says she feels it would be too dangerous to visit to support new album ‘Wake Up And Smell The Coffee’.

Speaking to The Mirror newspaper today (October 26), O’Riordan says she watched CNN footage of the second ‘plane smashing into the World Trade Center. She added: “It was so shocking because I guess no one ever thought someone would do this to America. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to go over there now. It’s way too dangerous at the moment.”

The diminutive frontwoman added: “We were planning to go on tour next year, but if all hell breaks loose I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying at home with my family.”

The Cranberries return for December US radio tour

October 25, 2001  |  Comments Off on The Cranberries return for December US radio tour  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

LiveDaily has learned that The Cranberries will be returning to the United States in December for a promotional tour of radio festivals. Earlier this month, the band cancelled much of their remaining promotion for the year. Luckily, they are being strong and moving on.

The report confirms that news that the band will in fact play Detroit on Dec. 11th, the final venue in the tour. The current schedule is:

Dec. 3: Boston, MA – TBA (WBMX-FM festival)
Dec. 5: Cleveland, OH – TBA (WQAL-FM festival)
Dec 8: Baltimore, MD TBA (WMMX-FM festival)
Dec 9: Tampa, FL – TBA (WSSR-FM festival)
Dec 10: Providence, RI – TBA (WPRO-FM festival)
Dec 11: Detroit, MI – State Theatre (WKQI-FM’s Jingle Ball 2001 with Jewel, Nelly Furtado and others)

Tickets for the Jingle Ball 2001 have already been long sold out, though tickets are still being given away through contests on WKQI FM. In the meanwhile, I myself will be trying my damnedest to get tickets for the Baltimore show, and will hopefully have a full report if all goes well.

1. Depeche Mode – “Enjoy the Slience”
2. U2 – “With or Without You”
Dolores: “Very cool clip, one of their best songs — they are also from Ireland, so…”
3. Aerosmith – “Jaded”
Dolores: “Really cool band, Steven Tyler is a really cool guy, his daughter is my age… I like the Victorian style in the video.”
4. REM – “Tongue”
Dolores & Fergal: “We toured with them and we love the mirrorball in the video — they had it also on the tour”
5. Led Zeppelin – “Stairway to Heaven”
Dolores: “It ́s a classic, no one will not like this, I chose it because I ́ve never seen the video — I wanted to see it!”
Fergal: “People thought that when they played it backwards, that there was a hidden message in there.”
Dolores: “I remember that, it was in the 70’s… oh, those 70’s” (smiling at the camera)
6. Coldplay – “Trouble”
7. David Bowie – “Let ́s Dance”
Dolores: “Beautiful video, I really loved his red shoes in this video… Dorothy will be jealous… You know, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz!”

“Analyse” not shown on “Top Of The Pops”

October 25, 2001  |  Comments Off on “Analyse” not shown on “Top Of The Pops”  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Because “Analyse” has failed to reach the top 75 in the British single charts, “Analyse” will not be featured on the show “Top of the Pops”, which showcases live versions of songs in the top 75 positions. The performance was recorded several weeks ago. The song entered the charts at #89.

The cause of the poor performance may in part be due to one occurence. Fans in the UK felt cheated due to the cut of “In the Ghetto (live)” in the UK version and have thus opted to buy the 4-track mainland European release. “Analyse [was] released in the UK today, I didn’t buy it because we only get 3 tracks and I want to get hold of the 4 track,” said one disappointed British fan. Others ascribe the low position to the even more disappointing fact that the song is getting very little airplay on UK stations.

Next single: This Is The Day?

October 20, 2001  |  Comments Off on Next single: This Is The Day?  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Despite the fact that the band has announced “Time Is Ticking Out” as the next single and is even considering a benefit single, a Mexican Universal- sponsored site, Citaris claims that “This Is The Day” will become the band’s next single. On Citaris’s “Wake Up” promotional page, they have a pseudo- exclusive download of the song available, as well as the video to “Analyse”. So which will it be? I suppose time will have to answer.

Now, time for an editorial spin — In this editor’s opinion, “This Is The Day” deserves to be the band’s next single. It is punctually rock and just plain kick-ass, a myriad more than “Promises” ever was. “Time Is Ticking Out” is a decent song, but the lyrics and melody are far too weak to become a radio hit of any measure.

The Cranberries to play Detroit Dec.11 2001?

October 19, 2001  |  Comments Off on The Cranberries to play Detroit Dec.11 2001?  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

According to concert mega-site Pollstar, The Cranberries are listed for a December 11th gig at the State Theatre in Detroit, MI. The gig is part of a Christmas radio festival, featuring other artists such as Train, Nelly Furtado, and O-Town. However, with the recent cancellation of remaining promo gigs (including the much-anticipated Intimate & Interactive, which would have been held later this month), it is difficult to forsee the band attending the gig. In all likelihood, the date has been cancelled. However, to make things interesting, the date was just posted within the last 72 hours. It may be that there were several dates planned for the US (which makes things even more disappointing), but the venue has not yet been notified of the band’s cancellation. Or, on the other hand, there’s always that glimmer of hope.

On Saturday, a new interview with Dolores was aired on MTV Germany’s “Fashion Zone”. Dolores got to show off her threads — everything she wore for the show was designed by Dolce & Gabbana (*gasp* no Calvin Klein?).

“Rock ‘n’ roll will never die!” she says as she romps around in a cafe in Dublin during the interview. She also admits that she’s dropped a load of cash for clothing during the last promo tour. Her most expensive item was 10,000 pounds (approx. $14,500) for a coat she simply couldn’t do without. For those interested, her shoe size is (in European dimensions) a 38, which is around a 7 or 7 1/2 in the US.

AN IRISH FAMILY
– Dolores O’Riordan speaks about her transformation –

Maternity sweetened the Limerick band’s front girl, who wrote an album with soft and positive songs which reflect the newly-found balance and the agreement with the group of friends.

For some hours, the elegant hotel’s bar turns itself into a pub. You can see them, Mike, Fergal, Dolores and his husband Don Burton. Their backs, close one to the other, Dolores’ very small one grazes Don’s firm one. The only person missing is Noel, Mike’s brother, who stayed in Ireland since his wife is ill. They laugh and smile at each other, chat and drink beer. They look like an Irish family on vacation, rather than one of the most famous rock bands in the world, the Cranberries. You can breathe an air of accomplice and steady friendship: Dolores O’Riordan, dark- haired again, with her shining eyes, sits in the center, protected and cuddled by her men. Slight, with a bright face and an energic behavior, the singer, voice and creative mind of the Cranberries, is living a golden moment. The birth of her second child, Molly, seven months ago, a new album, “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee”, coming out, and, over all, her newly-found happiness. “Making children is a very good remedy against the stress that success gives” she says. “And this album exactly reflects how I feel now. It’s like a big waking up to life. In the past I made many mistakes, I threw myself into work only, leaving too many things behind.. I almost destroyed my life. Until I took a break to dedicate myself to family again.”

Question: Each of your albums reflects you inner feelings: in “To The Faithful Departed” you were darker, in “Bury the Hatchet” there was more fun. What have you felt writing this record? Answer: Big positivity and excitement. The knowledge of having regained the spirit of our beginning, thank God. Then, there’s the fact that we don’t know what is waiting for us behind the corner, so, when you realize that you’re living a good moment, professionally and humanly, you feel like you’ve been blessed by God. Just like when you’re inside a tunnel: you see the lights shining at the end and when you finally come out, you’re illuminated.

Q: Talking about music, it looks like a softer album compared to the previous ones. Is this because your special mood, too?
A: There’s no doubt that my maternal condition took part in the process of sweetening these songs. Making another child regenerated me and made me discover again a natural tenderness which is too often suffocated. Living in a rock band for many years makes a girl tougher, and I must acknowledge that I began to go too far in this sense, losing a great part of my feminine side.

Q: Is there a common denominator in the album?
A: Every song has a positive message, or content. The only different track is “Time Is Ticking Out”, which is about the enviromental problem and about how much we hurt our planet.

Q: Where was “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee” born?
A: We recorded it at the Windmill Lane at Dublin and we mixed it at the Town House at London, but it’s been conceived, as all our albums have, at Killmallock, near my house, in the Irish country, at about twenty minutes from Limerick. A fascinating place, very inspirating. The Irish people, with their strong and romantic temper, unique in the world, originated from this countryside. We’re stubborn people, we always say what we think, but our heart is big as our sky.

Q: What does your house looks like?
A: It’s a 19th century country-house remodeled by some Canadian friends, in the middle of hectares of fields and hills. We’ve got many horses, a big black pig, hens, pheasants, a couple of peacocks, and a lot of dogs. It’s very important to me, because my father was a gardener, and I like taking my children to discover nature, making them see how things come out and grow from the earth.

Q: Does success take away balance?
A: Definitely yes, I’ve experienced that on myself. This is the reason why we stopped and we wanted an almost total control on all the things which concern our career.

Q: Seems like you’re very good friends…
A: It’s not only us, but also our families. Mike’s wife is about to have a child, and at my birthday party she played with my children just like she was their aunt. This is the spirit between us. We’re so united that we have decided to open a Japanese restaurant in Dublin. So, even if one day the Cranberries don’t exist any more, we’d still have something which unites us professionally.

The Cranberries cancel remaining 2001 promotion

October 12, 2001  |  Comments Off on The Cranberries cancel remaining 2001 promotion  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

In a letter of explanation on The Cranberries Official Webpage, Dolores has unfortunately cancelled the remainder of the band’s promo tour for the rest of 2001. “Life is a precious gift not to be taken for granted and obviously with the International Coalition action in Afghanistan,” she writes, “and all of the strange co-incidents, (anthrax etc), it is not worth the risk of travelling around.”

The band had originally planned to do promotion until December.

The Cranberries of Prat has posted some scans from an interview in the Spanish magazine “Top Music”. Check them out below.

The Cranberries of Prat also has some great comparison shots of the edited and unedited versions of “Analyse” in their news section, which are certainly worth the look. In related news, the new edited version of “Analyse” is currently airing on VH1 in the United States, usually late at night on “Insomniac Music Marathon”. If you can’t afford the lack of sleep, VCR timers perform handily in these situations…

The Cranberries perform Oceanic Remix live on CD:UK

October 6, 2001  |  Comments Off on The Cranberries perform Oceanic Remix live on CD:UK  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Earlier today on the British TV station CD:UK, The Cranberries made their first public performance of a live version of “Analyse: The Oceanic Remix”. The performance was broadcasted live (not pre-recorded). Five people were on stage, including Dolores (without an instrument), Noel on guitar, Russel Burton on keyboards, Fergal on drums, and Declan Hogan, who substituted for Mike on bass. For those unfamiliar with the name, Declan was featured on the “Technician’s Documentary” on the DVD “Beneath the Skin”. Backing vocalist Steve DeMarchi was not present. However, only Dolores’s vocals were live — the remixed backing track was pre-recorded. Because it was broadcasted live, Dolores’s vocals were “slightly wobbly” at first, but picked up soon.

And, in the event that Joan Rivers is reading this, Dolores wore a long white dress with leopard print stilletos. The performance was one of the band’s first appearances on British TV since April 1999’s TOTP performance.

For those in the UK, remember the Top of the Pops performance is currently due to air on Friday, 26th October 2001 on BBC1, at 7:30 pm. Thanks to Daniel Robert James Steward for the info — be sure to check out his page, Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Unofficial Fansite.

Mike absent from European Promo Tour due to wife’s expectancy

October 5, 2001  |  Comments Off on Mike absent from European Promo Tour due to wife’s expectancy  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

Zombieguide reader Dan Le Palud was able to attend the live taping of Hit- Machine in Paris earlier this week, and he brings us this report.

The Cranberries were the first band to play for the show. Bassist Mike Hogan was absent from the performance, while the band arranged for a temporary replacement to play bass during the gig. He is at home with his wife, as they are expecting their first baby within the next few weeks, according to a radio interview with Dolores days ago. Mike’s brother Noel, however, has returned now for the European leg of the promotion and was on guitar on stage. He had been absent from the American touring in August due to the illness of his daughter.

“Dolores was absolutely amazing with a long black dress,” Dan comments, “and ‘Analyse’ sounded more ‘rock’.”

The episode of Hit-Machine will broadcast on Saturday, October 13th on M6 at 10:30 AM (Paris).

Thanks to Dan and Jessica from Holland for the info.

While the album isn’t even out yet, The Cranberries have chosen the successor to their current single, “Analyse”. The band chatted today online on the French Universal Music site, and while they did, they responded to several fans’ questions. Here’s a quick recap of the topics the group hit on:

· Among the band’s favorite French artists are Daft Punk, Modjo and Air
· Noel’s favorite guitar is the Les Paul Gibson
· The group noted that they love Storm Thorgerson’s artwork because they don’t want to have their faces on the front cover of albums
· No favorite song from “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” has emerged…
· The band has confirmed that they are indeed already writing material for a sixth album
· They are vigorously preparing for next year’s world tour
· Their favorite video to date is “Analyse”
· The Cranberries have chosen “Time is Ticking Out” as their next single

The Cranberries’ re-edited video ‘Analyse’ rushed back to broadcasters

September 30, 2001  |  Comments Off on The Cranberries’ re-edited video ‘Analyse’ rushed back to broadcasters  |  by Zombieguide Archives  |  The Cranberries

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ —

In the wake of the Pentagon and World Trade Center tragedies, MCA Records and The Cranberries recalled their premier video from the Irish band’s upcoming new album, “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee,” mere weeks before its debut release date. “Analyse” had been filmed in London by Australian director, Keir McFarland, a month before it was sent to the world’s major video networks (including MTV/VH-1, Much Music, Viva TV, Canal Plus, Channel V) at the beginning of September.

As the video was being screened around the world (and on the band’s own web-site), the events that took place on September 11th eerily mirrored sights captured by amateur and news cameras on that fateful day. MCA Records and the band immediately recalled the video from broadcasters worldwide after it became clear that scenes in the video could bring to mind those tragic memories.

Keir McFarland quickly organised a few simple edits eliminating the questionable scenes of lead singer — Dolores O’Riordan — performing atop a building as a plane flew over two skyscrapers. Another scene, which included the outline of a dead body in police tape, was replaced by a child’s chalk drawing of a flower on the pavement.

MCA Records (a division of Vivendi/Universal) are having their affiliate in London air courier replacement masters to the world in record time. It is expected that all channels will have the new video by Monday, October 1, 2001.

The band also resumed media promotional appearances in Europe beginning this week, visiting the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, after cutting short their previous schedule as a result of the terrorist attacks in New York. “Analyse” debuted at no. 3 on the singles sales chart this week in Spain.
The band will continue with promotional appearances in Europe, North America and South East Asia through December 11.

The Cranberries’ new album, “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee,” was produced by Stephen Street, producer of the band’s first two albums. “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee” will receive a staggered release around the world: October 3 in Japan; October 15 Internationally (excluding the United Kingdom and North America); October 22 United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland; October 23 North America.
