Following August’s radio and interview tour around the US, The Cranberries began their European venture today in Edinburgh, Scotland. Interviews on todays agenda included ScotFM / Forth FM and Clyde Radio. Tomorrow, the band heads to Manchester, England for interviews for Key 103, Century Radio, and Big AM (Stockton).

The Cranberries Official Website has posted the entire tentative schedule for the band’s European tour, which is set to end on October 6th in London. As with the US tour, the site is giving away tickets in a 30-word essay contest. Winners will receive tickets for the September 25th Amsterdam, Holland intimate gig.

If you were an average Internet surfer and suddenly needed info on The Cranberries, where would you go? Cranberries.com of course. Since 1996, the site has been online, owned hosted by Island Records. However, unfortunately for those in need of good content, the site was only updated when new material was released by the band. The last update to the page was in March 2001 for the US release of The Complete Sessions.

However, now the hyperlink takes you to something else — The Cranberries Official International Homepage, the Ireland-based page that was previously (and still is) found at www.cranberries.ie. The international page has always been much more personal and far less “corporate” than Island. With Island owning the domain previously, it’s unknown if the band had to strike a deal to receive the domain for their personal site. So update your links!

As if your wait for “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” couldn’t get any harder, we Americans (and the rest of the world for that matter) have even more coming to them in October.

The official site confirmed today that there will be four distinctly different versions of “Wake Up”: Japanese, UK, North American and International version. Each version will contain bonus tracks not found on the other versions. However, all four versions will contain the thirteen tracks of the previously-revealed tracklist. But with the recent revelation that the Japanese version will only contain one bonus track, it’s possible that one exclusive bonus track may be standard on all four editions.

The Star 98.7 “Live From The Lounge” performance and interview was aired Tuesday night as scheduled in LA. The entire show was acoustic, with the following tracklist:

The entire show was an hour and a half, with lots of interviews. Topics included the “Analyse” video, the upcoming 2002 tour, their kids — even the laughable fact Dolores is still trying to get her Driver’s License!
The band requested “Elevation” by U2 while on the show, and also discussed their relationship with Bono. In fact, about a year and a half ago, Bono played some of his new album for Dolores, in of all places, a bathroom!

A new advertisement for “Analyse” can be found circulating various trade ads in the US, this one from Radio – Music – Hits Magazine. In case you aren’t familiar with “trade magazines”, they’re industry-geared magazines that feature industry/label news, etc, and usually many ads (such as this one) to advertise upcoming releases or boast about sales.

Yet another “Analyse” promo is out there in this great big world of ours. Same tracks (radio edit and album version), new art! We have no indication of what region this is from (although I would guess Europe). However, instead of the band-in-the-feild shots, the minimalist cover has only stylized black text on a white background, whereas the CD has the inverse.

As predicted by The Herald days earlier, The Cranberries made a live appearance on music channel MusiquePlus yesterday during their stop in Montréal. The special, which started at 4 PM EST, started off with an interview of the band. The band discussed the current “baby boom” within the band. The interviewer, who was lucky enough to hear all 13 tracks from the new album, said that it did indeed sound like a mix of their previous four works and overall has a positive feel.

During the show, the band was presented with a plaque for over 2 million (and nearly 3 million) in sales in Canada for the band’s albums. The band was awarded a similar plaque by MusiquePlus in May 1999 for the #1 chart position of BTH and sales in excess of 1 million for that album.

Music videos for Dreams, Zombie, and Salvation were aired. But the real surprise of the show was the world premiere of the video for “Analyse,” which doesn’t get aired globally until next month. Watchers were able to see a full minute of the video (but not the entire video). The clip begins as a man walks out of a traffic sign. Dolores is then seen with dark short hair on a highway as the cars speed past her in fast forward mode. Meanwhile, the rest of the band stay seated comfortably in chairs, not playing instruments.

Zombieguide has acquired a scan of the second UK 5-track sampler, different from the previous 5-track UK sampler, which included “Every Morning”. Dutch music distributor Enetersys is currently taking preorders for the European release of “Analyse”. Normally, this wouldn’t be newsworthy, however, the site states that the single will be released in 3-inch CD format, something that doesn’t happen often. The last major 3″ Cranberries CD was the Japanese release of “I Can’t Be With You” in 1995.

Those lucky enough to attend the intimate gigs of the current US promo tour have speculated much on the absence of Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan. The Cranberries E-mail Newsletter was able to chat briefly yesterday with Cranberries backup singer Steve Demarchi regarding Noel’s absence, among other topics. Demarchi is currently filling in for Noel on lead guitar. He told the Newsletter that Noel was back at home tending to “family problems”. Of course, fans needn’t fear too much — Demarchi assures that Noel fully intends to remain an active member of the band.

Demarchi also had some tidbits on the next world tour. The tour will begin in January or February of 2002, but the exact date will depend on album sales of “Wake Up”. In addition, the band hopes to begin the tour in a region that is “warm”, which can leave some speculation — South America? Mexico? Africa? Australia?

Canadian radio station RadioEnergie announced a bit of news on the air today that should appease many anxious Canadian fans (and God knows there’s a ton of you). The station reported that the Cranberries will be visiting Montreal, Canada Friday as a part of their ongoing North American promo tour. No appearences have been announced, but gigs at radio stations and perhaps MusiquePlus are possible (but by no means confirmed). The announcement was made today on the RadioEnergie Countdown by host Anne-Marie Wittenshaw — “Analyse” is currently #25 on the chart.

It seems that The Cranberries performance on “Live From The Lounge” did not air yesterday, but instead will air next Tuesday (yesterday’s performance was Bare Naked Ladies).

The Cranberries dropped into the Star Lounge last Monday in Los Angeles to record a segment for “Live from the Lounge”. The show hasn’t aired yet, but will be doing so next Tuesday. Star 98.7 will be broadcasting the show Tuesday, August 28th, 2001, at 8:30 PM PST. Unfortunately, the station’s online livestream is currently not working, so those who don’t live west coast are out of luck.

Fergal Lawler has posted some reflections via The Cranberries Official International Homepage as the band currently tours America doing radio and private gigs. It seems that the band that was so anxious to tour a few weeks ago is now experiencing some homesickness! But for their first tour away from home in over a year, that’s a bit understandable. Here’s what Fergal writes:

Well here we are in the good ol’ USA about to go to Mortens steakhouse for “A big thick shteack” (must be said in an Irish accent). We are really enjoying ourselves, getting to meet loads of fans and playing a few special intimate shows. There was an airshow in Chicago the other day but unfortunately it rained for the whole thing so visability wasn’t the best, but it was still pretty exciting. We are in Minneapolis at the moment. We did a couple of acoustic songs at the radio station here WTCZ. It’s different playing stuff acoustically but doing stuff like that, helps keep it interesting for us.It’s a bit of a challenge. I must admit it’s tough being away from our families, but being a cranberry is such a big part of our lives that we would go insane if we were to stay at home all the time. Plus we seem to be making a lot of people happy, so I think it’s definitely worth the bouts of sadness you get daily. You’ve just got to shrug it off and get on with it. It helps when we get to meet people after the show and they tell you that they have listened to the ‘berries since way back when. It’s the same with the thousands of e-mails we receive weekly it’s just so encouraging. A sincere THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!!!!! Anyway I’ll go before I start getting too emotional. Oh yeah I’m going to see U2 in Slane (Ireland) on Saturday so I’LL let you know how it went. Talk to ya’ soon, Fergal.

WarChild from the ZG Discussion Boards has posted an informative and well-written review of Minneapolis, MN private gig. WarChild writes:

Well, The Cranberries came on the afternoon drive at the local radio station, Cities 97. They chatted a bit with Brian Oake. They said they enjoyed working with Steven Street, it doesn’t seem like work, just plain singing and having fun. There was not a conscious effort to make the music sound like the early days, because then everything gets to technical, and they just want it to come from the heart. (I’ll post a full transcript of the interview next week) Then they played Linger, it was completely acoustic, except they used a keyboard for a string section sound, the beginning was a little different. Then they played a new song called Never Grow Old, it was quite beautiful, acoustic guitars, piano, bongo drums, very reminiscent of the early slow ones, I will always, Ode to my family, what you were, dreaming my dreams, very tender, lots of soul. For the last song they played Analyse, acoustic, but they had a couple keyboard sounds in it. I really liked analyse played acoustic.

The Show:

Brian Oake came out and pumped up the crowd be saying, “Only one of five North American appearances for their promotional tour for the new album Wake Up and Smell The Coffee, I got to hear these guys today in the afternoon, their in top form!!! Please welcome The cranberries!!!!!!!!!!”
Everyone cheered as ferg, Mike, [Russel] Burton (Keyboard guy), and Steve came on stage. The lights came on and the first thing I thought to myself was, boy Steve looks really old! Then a Guitar started playing and Dolores walked on stage playing Zombie. The keyboard guy was also playing guitar during certain times lastnight. Then they played Analyse, It was a little more rockin than the album version, and they added an organ part (like the organ sound they used on Free to Decide).
Then Dolores said the next song was pretty self explainitory, about the ozone. The crowd really got into Time is Ticking Out. Everyone went crazy for Linger (and for whoever wanted to know, Dolly was playing guitar for that song) and the crown went wild for When You’re gone. Then she said this next song was written about 3 and a half years ago, about the birth of her first child, and she had anotherone 6 months ago. Animal Instinct was good, the keyboard guy played guitar for the whole song, and Dolores played keyboards at the end of the song. Steve really rocked out on the solo at the end, and sounded surprisingly well at the end when he sang, “its the animal….” Then then they did Free to Fecide, which Dolores played the solo at the end. After that they did Salvation where she wiped the sweat off her body with a towel and thew it out into the audience, and ended with Dreams, Which Steve played with more of a rockin flare, its kind of hard to explain. Dolores did this dance at the end of dreams that I head never seen before (At the 99 concert, or any of the videos). She thew out another towel.
Then we all applauded and applauded and cheered and whistled until they came back and played promises. Promises was rockin and Steve played the solo with a little bit more umph than usual. And then the concert was over.

First of all I’d like to tell you all that I play 3 musical insturments and sing, so I know what I’m talking about musically. NONE of these songs were played acoustic or semi-acoustic. They were played full Blown electric, like any other concert, which seemed a little strange to me since they had us all vote online. but like I said earlier in the post, Linger, Never Grow Old and Analyse were played semi acoustic on the radio show.

All in all it was a very good concert, it was defferent than what I expected, not being acoustic and all, but I saw the cranberries for free in an intimate venue (100-125 people) and was 5 feet away from the stage. It was 47 minutes of heaven.

Zombieguide today has gotten word of another disclosed album track title, this time called “Do You Know”. The news comes from yet another UK promo, different from the one posted days ago on The Herald. The new 5- track promo is printed on generic Universal CD-R acetate and also includes the tracks “Analyse” and “Dying Inside”. Again, this is just speculation for now and we won’t know until we get a final album tracklisting.

Mexico has received their promo edition of “Analyse”. The art is similar to the international release, except that it comes in a slimline case in contrast to the American jewel case. The disc art is also quite different, with the shot of the band instead of the bland blue US disc. The Mexican release contains the same tracks as the US release, the radio edit and album versions.

The headliner for the evening was The Cranberries, who after selling millions upon millions of albums in the early and mid-’90s, are returning to the scene with their MCA debut Wake Up and Smell the Coffee. But that fact didn’t stop the diminutive Dolores O’ Riordan and her mates from going back to the well for a series of crowd-favorite radio smashes. One burly gentleman in the crowd forced his way to the front of the room excusing himself as he went along by saying, “Excuse me but this is a religious experience for me, you don’t understand.”

This Tuesday, The Cranberries will be making another promo stop in New York City at The Museum of Television and Radio. The historic museum is located at 25 W. 52nd Street in the heart of the city. The Cranberries will be performing for the radio show “The World Cafe”, hosted by David Dye. In addition to a performance, host David Dye will also be interviewing the band about the upcoming album. The performance and interview will be aired sometime in the future on Voice Radio.

This past Tuesday, The Cranberries performed at Los Angeles’s The Roxy, their first public performance since last November. We now have first details from the show, including an incomplete setlist.

The first part of the show was:

Before playing the new track “Never Grow Old”, Dolores explained that she wrote it after the birth of her second child Molly, now six months old. Also noteworthy is that Noel was absent for the concert. Backup guitarist Steve Demarchi took his place.

Thanks to Zombieguide’s relentless Toronto correspondant Tara, we have a new small but valuable news bit. The Cranberries lead Dolores O’Riordan was spotted last Friday, August 3rd, eating in the Toronto restaurant Jack Astor’s. She was with hubby Don and one kid. Now that the video for “Analyse” was completed last week, it’s possible that the entire band is now in Toronto prepping for the American promo tour later this month. Dolores herself, is of course, no stranger to the area — she’s spent many years living there, and you’ll recall her first son Taylor was born there as well.

The Official International Homepage notes that the Japanese version of “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” (which will include 1 bonus track) has been moved up one week. Now the 14-track edition is scheduled to release on October 3rd, and it the earliest release date around the globe.

Yet another new promo for the new album is out, this time a 5-track sampler released in the UK. The sampler includes a another newly-revealed title, “Every Morning”. The disc and sleeve are very plain, as you can see below. Also given is the time elapsed for each track (“Wake Up” is the longest, reeling it at 5 min, 15 sec).

However, almost equally notable as the new title is what can be seen on the sleeve. The very distinctive Island Records logo is located right beside Universal. This raises all sorts of questions, as the band reportedly quietly left Island last fall. Will Island be doing the UK distribution? Or is the logo of no real significance?

Zombieguide has learned today that The Cranberries will be making an appearance this month on GetMusic.com’s “E-coustic Sessions”. The live Internet show optimizes Real Video to deliver live performances right to the viewer’s desktop. “There’ll be an interview and an acoustic performance of some of the new material,” a representative told the Herald. A date has not been set for the airing of the event however, but readers can check GetMusic’s Event Calendar for all the latest info.

As the show explains, “An acoustic guitar. A spare kit. A little bit of space. On The E-coustic Sessions, the expression “less is more” is taken seriously – it’s the best way to get to the soul of a song and the artist behind it. Let host Nevin Martell take you beyond the megawatt stadium experience as he sits down with some of today’s best up-and-coming talent for in-depth interviews and acoustic performances.”

Music importers have begun taking preorders on the Japanese version of “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee”. As per usual, the Japanese edition of the CD (like most albums there) will contain bonus material not found on the North American release. The Japanese “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” will contain one bonus track for a total of 14 tracks. We don’t have any more specifics yet, but one extra track is a bit scant compared to past offerings. “Bury the Hatchet” included two tracks (“Baby Blues”, “Sorry Son”) and “To the Faithful Departed” included all three B-sides from the album (“Cordell”, “The Picture I View”, “Intermission”).

MCA has put out yet another brand new promo for the ‘Berries. “Preserved – The Story So Far” is a new limited edition compilation that covers tracks from the first album until the present with “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee”. The first is an interview with Angelica about The Cranberries and the song — the video even shows a clip of the original Linger video. She admits that she can’t sing easily like Dolores does. The narrator also comments that “Dolores O’Riordan has a golden voice!”.

As Zombieguide reported earlier, Brazilian singer Angelica has covered The Cranberries classic “Linger”, with the title “Se a Gente Se Entender” (“If We Understand Ourselves”). Her album has now been released in Brazil (only), but we now have the full MP3 of the song available here on The Cranberries Herald. The song sounds moderately close to the original, and Dolores’s backing vocals seem to be intact (!).

Reputable French music television station M6 Music has revealed a limited French release will soon be making its way to store shelves. Previously- announced track “This is the Day” is currently scheduled for a release sometime in the near future as a single for France.

It is unknown if the track could be the second single from “Wake Up” or if it will be a France-only release. Non-single album tracks have a reputation of being very popular in France, where “Shattered” made it to the Top 10 radio airplay shortly after the release of “Bury the Hatchet”. Limited singles are also no strangers — recall that France got the very limited “Hollywood” single in 1997. If the track is indeed only limited to France, both “This is the Day” and “Analyse” may be competing for radio airplay.

Rolling Stone, who presumably got to hear the track, described it as “anthemic”.

MTV Asia has posted an interesting news story about the Crans. Although most of the information is previously known, it does feature an “insider” quote of why the band left Island. Also included is another new photo of the band — which resembles another photo you may remember from the official site. This one, taken on the last day of mixing “Wake Up” also includes MCA President Jay Boberg on the far left. Cranberries Smell The Coffee

Irish rock outfit Cranberries have signed a new record deal with MCA Records and are planning to release the group’s fifth album titled “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee” on October 23, 2001. According to WENN, the band have decided to switch labels when their contract with Island ended after their last album “Bury The Hatchet” failed to do as well in America as their previous releases.

 

A music source says, “The band feel there is a lot of lost ground to be made up in order to attain the same level of success that they once had again.”

 

The band have also engaged the help of producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Morrissey, Blur), who also produced the band’s first two mega- selling albums in the early ’90s.

 

To promote the band’s new album, Cranberries will go on a global promotional tour in early August to December 2001, after which, a world concert tour will follow in Spring 2002. — Lennat Mak

A new commercial bootleg titled “Ode To Italy” has hit the streets of Europe. The bootleg was recorded from the Lucca, Italy show last July 17th, 2000. The show was professionally recorded for radio broadcast, which is likely how this bootleg came about. Tracks are:

On his section of the official site, Fergal has confirmed that they will begin their promo tour in North America and will later continue to Europe.
Confirmed cities/locations for the August promo tour are:

More details on exact events and dates will come shortly. Meanwhile, the video shoot for “Analyse” will take place in London on August 3rd and 4th. The promo tour will then follow shortly, with live semi-acoustic performances. For September, the band will be in Europe, doing similar performances as in the US.

Fergal also responded to the “Top 10 Acoustic” poll, commenting that the band didn’t expect to see “Empty” and “Ridiculous Thoughts” on the list.

The HTML version of the site is still in production and should be ready late August. In other official site-related news, the mysterious “Open Gate” section which used to feature a confusing tomato thrown at the screen, now has a purpose. It will now be called “WUASTC”, featuring news and info on the album.

Ferg also recommends that if you’re a Formula 1 fan, you should definitely see a live race. “I was at the Silverstone Grand Prix in England last weekend to support the Jordan Team, and boy, what an experience! The sound from the engines just takes your breath away! Woo-hoo! It seems faster too, than it looks on TV,” he wrote.

While roaming the streets of downtown Toronto, I stopped by Edge102, the radio station famously known for being the first to play The Cranberries latest single, “Analyse”. Curious to know how they got a hold of the promo three weeks early, I questioned them about it. Though they didn’t answer my question, their response wasn’t nearly what I expected. The deejay started to laugh and said, “Hee hee, we actually got in trouble for that !” He went on to tell me that the band didn’t really mind, but it was the record company who emailed them complaining about it (Apparently because of promotional purposes). But I’m sure we all are very content with Edge102’s mistake… How much longer could our eager ears wait to hear some new Cran-tunes?

On the current “Cranfan Exclusive” part of the official page, a high- resolution scan of the promo for “Analyse” has been posted. The page also notes that the photo was taken on May 30th, but more importantly, has confirmed what has been suspected for several months: Storm Thorgerson will be returning for the art for the fifth album. In this photo, Thorgerson was responsible for the prominent polka-dot motif.

For those with a short memory, Thorgerson for the artwork on “Bury the Hatchet”, all related singles, and “Beneath the Skin”.

However, don’t get too attached to the art — you won’t be seeing it on store shelves. Official sources have confirmed that this art will not be on the commercial release for “Analyse”, so it will remain strictly on the promo (much like the art for the “You and Me” single). Will we see new Thorgerson art on the commercial release? We’ll see.

?Following our last posting of low-quality “Analyse” clips, Zombieguide has been fortunate enough to acquire high-quality clips of “Analyse”, along with two other songs (and possible future singles), “Time is Ticking Out,” and “Carry On”.

“Carry On” sounds to be a beautiful, quite personal song, in the vein of the EEIDSWCW? B-side “What You Were”. Meanwhile, “Time is Ticking Out” sounds overly familiar, thanks to the early clip we heard from last November. It’s a double-sided song, weaving environmental awareness with a love theme.

According to the Official International Cranberries Page, an “official” release date has been set for the radio broadcast of “Analyse”. August 6th is the premiere date for “Analyse”. The official page also notes the Toronto radio station (Edge 102) played the song earlier than anticipated — and also gave a link to Zombieguide to hear the clips. Wohoo!

Well, here it is. The first official release of new material in over a year. We’ve reported over the last few days that “Analyse” has started playing on various radio stations, and we now have a scan of the promo single being sent out.

The cover features a new Andy Earl shot of the band covered in red spots. Nice artwork, but it doesn’t confirm the rumored return of Storm Thorgerson. Promo art almost always mirrors the commercial release, so expect the single to appear similar. Tracks are as follows:

Also, we have another small but important related tidbit. As you can see on the cover, the spelling is the British “Analyse”. “Analyse” is the proper spelling of the new song, confirmed by the band’s representative, and will not be changed for the US audience.

According to The-Cranberries.com, a new song title from “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” has been revealed. “Carry On” is now the 12th known title from the new album, which means only one left to be disclosed. Four titles for B-sides are also still unknown.

According to The-Cranberries.com, a release date for “Analyze” has been set at September 14th, 2001. We now have confirmation that this date is for the European release, taken from a Portuguese online retailer. Thanks to Pedro for the clarification. We now have more details about yesterday’s story of Analyze hitting the radio.
The first reported station to air the new song is Toronto’s Edge 102 Radio. The song first aired on Friday at 7:15 AM and again yesterday at 1:30 PM. It seems the station is living up to its motto, “Hear it first, on the NewRock Edge 102!”
Tara, Zombieguide contributor and “helper monkey”, heard the song first-hand and also noted, “Though this is only our first glimpse into the upcoming album, Analyze promises a good future for Wake Up And Smell The Coffee.”
